Chapter 19 - The Runway at SunsetThe autumn of 2034 brought a brilliant, golden sunset over Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

I walked through the terminal doors after landing on Flight 108 from Seattle. At seventy-four years old, my silver hair was styled neatly, my posture was straight, and my blue trench coat fit comfortably over my shoulders.
Standing near the baggage claim exit was my eight-year-old granddaughter, Lily, wearing a bright yellow dress, her dark curls bouncing as she ran across the polished floor toward me.
"Grandma Margaret!" she cheered, throwing her arms around my waist.
I lifted her up, hugging her tightly, smelling the sweet scent of clover and warm sunshine on her hair.
"Look how tall you've grown, Lily!" I laughed, setting her down gently.
Clara walked up behind her, holding two cups of fresh coffee, her smile warm and peaceful. "Welcome home, Mom. How was the flight?"
"First Class, as always," I smiled, winking at Lily. "Smooth, comfortable, and plenty of room."
We walked out to the parking area together. The evening sky over North Carolina was a breathtaking expanse of deep amber, rose, and violet, stretching out over the rolling green hills as far as the eye could see.
Lily held my hand tightly as we walked along the sidewalk.
"Grandma?" Lily asked, looking up at me with her big brown eyes.
"Yes, sweet pea?"
"When I grow up and take an airplane by myself," Lily said proudly, "am I going to sit in First Class like you?"
I stopped on the sidewalk, kneeling down so I was eye-level with my granddaughter. I reached out, smoothing a dark curl back from her forehead, looking into the bright, brave eyes of the future.

"You can sit wherever you choose in this world, Lily," I told her, my voice clear, steady, and filled with absolute love. "First class, economy, the head of a table, or the top of a mountain. But wherever you sit... you never let anyone tell you that you don't belong there."
Lily smiled—a fierce, radiant expression that lit up the dusk. "I won't, Grandma. I'll take up my whole space."
