Chapter 17 - The Encounter at Gate B8In the spring of 2032, I was sitting in the First Class departure lounge at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, waiting for my morning flight to Charlotte.

I wore a crisp cream trench coat, sipping a fresh cup of Earl Grey tea while reading a paperback novel.

A voice called out from near the entrance of the lounge: "Mrs. Miller?"

I looked up.

Walking toward my table was a young woman wearing a sharp navy business suit, carrying a leather briefcase, her dark hair pulled back into a neat, confident bun. Her face was bright, professional, and radiating self-assurance.

It took me two seconds to recognize her.

"Maya!" I exclaimed, standing up with a warm smile.

It was Maya—the young woman I had met six years prior in Row 4 of Premium Economy, the woman who had sat cowering in Seat 4B while an arrogant passenger invaded her space.

"I can't believe it's you!" Maya said, hugging me warmly. "I saw you sitting here and I had to come say hello."

We sat together at the small marble table. Maya pulled out her business card, handing it to me proudly: Senior Financial Analyst, Pacific Global Management.

"Look at you," I said, looking at the crisp card. "You look magnificent."

"I wanted to tell you something, Margaret," Maya said, her eyes shining with genuine emotion. "That flight six years ago changed the entire course of my life."

"How so?" I asked gently.

"Three months after that flight," Maya revealed, "I was passed over for a major promotion at my previous firm. A senior manager tried to take credit for my financial model during a department meeting. Old Maya would have stayed quiet, swallowed the hurt, and let him take it."

She smiled—a sharp, brilliant expression.

"But I sat in that conference room," Maya continued, "and I thought of you sitting in Seat 2A, telling me that surrender is not a virtue. I stood up in front of the entire executive board, pulled up my original data files, and proved that the work was mine. I got the promotion two weeks later."

I reached across the table, taking her hand in both of mine, my heart swelling with deep, quiet joy.

"You claimed your space, Maya," I said softly.

"Because you taught me how," she replied.
