Chapter 9 - The Unexpected LetterOn the second week of my stay in Matthews, a thick manila envelope arrived in Clara’s mailbox, addressed to Mrs. Margaret Miller care of Clara's address.

I opened it at the kitchen counter while Lily slept in her swing.

Inside was an official letter printed on heavy cream letterhead bearing the logo of American Global Airlines, signed by the Vice President of Customer Experience.

Dear Mrs. Miller,

We are writing to follow up on the inflight report submitted by Flight Attendant Sarah Jennings regarding your experience on Flight 412 from Seattle to Charlotte.

American Global Airlines strives to maintain a safe, respectful, and comfortable environment for all passengers. Following a review of the crew documentation and witness statements from nearby passengers in Row 24, we have issued a formal written warning to the passenger seated in 24B regarding our Customer Code of Conduct.

Furthermore, as an apology for the physical discomfort and unacceptable behavior you endured during the first four hours of your journey, we have issued a full refund for your flight segment, along with two complimentary round-trip First Class vouchers for your future travel.

We thank you for your grace, your patience, and for bringing this matter to our crew's attention.

I sat at the table, running my fingers over the gold-embossed airline seal.

A full refund. Two First Class vouchers.

I thought about the man in the quarter-zip sweater—how he had sat in his middle seat, furious and embarrassed, watching me drink tea from a porcelain cup in Row 4. He had wanted to humiliate me. He had wanted to force me into the corner so he could stretch his legs.

Instead, his arrogance had bought me two free First Class tickets to visit my granddaughter whenever I pleased.
