Chapter 10 - The Safe ReturnThree weeks later, the autumn storm clouds had cleared, replaced by a brilliant, crisp October afternoon.

Grace Parker sat on the wide wooden porch of a quiet, sunlit farmhouse in the rolling hills north of the city—a safehouse provided under federal witness protection while the final court dates were set.

The screen door opened.

Luke stepped out onto the porch carrying a small wicker basket filled with fresh apples, wearing a simple flannel shirt and jeans. Beside him walked five-year-old Ava, her hand wrapped tightly around his finger, chattering happily about a squirrel she had seen in the orchard.

Grace looked up from her rocking chair, a soft, genuine smile gracing her face—the first true smile Luke had seen since she collapsed in the chapel aisles.

“How’s the arm?” Luke asked, setting the basket down and kneeling beside her chair, gently taking her hand.

“Healing,” Grace whispered, her thumb brushing the back of his hand where the skin was finally free of bruises. “The doctor said the baby is growing normally. No more complications.”

Ava dropped Luke’s hand and ran over to lean against Grace’s knee. “Mommy, can we pick apples for a pie?”

“We certainly can, sweetheart,” Grace laughed softly.

Luke stood up, looking out over the golden hills stretching toward the horizon. The Whitmore empire had crumbled into dust. The court trials were scheduled for the spring, but the outcome was no longer in doubt. The truth was out, locked securely in federal ledgers that no amount of money could ever erase.

He reached down, taking Grace’s hand in one hand and Ava’s small hand in the other, feeling the solid, unshakeable warmth of a future he had almost lost.

“We’re safe now,” Luke said quietly.

Grace leaned her head against his shoulder, her eyes shining in the golden afternoon light. “I know, Luke. We’re finally home.”
