Chapter 8 - Dawn at the CitadelThe sun rose over the Chicago skyline like a smear of cold grease through the heavy gray clouds.

At 6:00 AM sharp, a convoy of twelve unmarked state police cruisers and federal black-and-whites converged on the seventy-story glass monolith of Whitmore Enterprises.
Inside the executive penthouse, Richard Whitmore stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a fresh cup of coffee, watching the first police cruisers pull up to the revolving glass doors. His face was entirely devoid of panic. It was sculpted from the arrogant certainty of a man who believed his money could buy the sunrise itself.
The heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open.
Marcus Vance strode in, his face bruised from the fire extinguisher impact, his gray suit wrinkled. “Mr. Whitmore, the state police have secured the lobby. They’re coming up the private elevators with federal warrants.”
Richard didn't turn around. He took a slow sip of his coffee. “Let them come, Marcus. Did you destroy the secondary servers at the upstate farm?”
“Every drive was incinerated at 4:00 AM,” Vance confirmed. “There is no physical paper trail left outside of what Bennett gave to the District Attorney last night. And as for Bennett and the girl—they won't be testifying.”
Before Richard could answer, the private elevator chime echoed through the penthouse.
DING.
The polished steel doors slid open.
ADA Evelyn Reed stepped out, flanked by four armed federal marshals in tactical gear. Behind her walked Luke Bennett, his face set in hard, unyielding lines.
“Richard Whitmore,” Reed announced, her voice ringing clear across the silent penthouse board room. “You are under arrest for federal racketeering, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice.”
Richard slowly turned around, setting his coffee cup down on the marble bar. A thin, condescending smile touched his lips. “Ms. Reed. You’re making a monumental mistake. My legal team will have these warrants quashed before you reach the precinct.”
“Your legal team is currently being escorted out of the building by the IRS,” Reed replied smoothly, stepping aside.
Two federal marshals stepped forward, the heavy steel handcuffs glinting in the morning light.

Richard didn't resist as the cuffs locked around his wrists. But as he was led past Luke, his cold, venomous eyes locked onto Luke’s face. “You think you’ve won, boy? You just destroyed the very foundation that pays for your child’s future. Brooke will outlive us all.”
“Brooke is next,” Luke said quietly.
