Chapter 13 - The Voice on the StandA collective whisper rippled through the gallery as Grace stood up from her chair.

Dressed in a simple, elegant ivory blouse and dark trousers that clearly showed her full-term pregnancy, she walked down the center aisle toward the witness stand. Her steps were measured, her head held high, her posture radiating a quiet, invincible dignity that filled the room.
As she passed the defense table, Brooke instinctively flinched, looking down at the wooden desk. Richard glared at Grace with a cold, desperate hatred, but Grace did not grant him a single glance.
She stepped into the witness box, placed her hand on the Bible, and swore the oath in a voice that didn't waver once.
For three hours, Evelyn Reed guided Grace through her testimony.
Grace spoke about the morning she was intercepted outside her apartment six months ago. She described the private security farm in the country, the cold room where she was kept isolated, and the repeated threats made against her daughter Ava if she dared to reach out to Luke.
She pulled out no theatrical drama. She offered no tears. She simply stated the raw, unvarnished facts with an absolute, terrifying clarity.
"And when you escaped from the facility, Ms. Parker," Reed asked softly, "where did you go?"
"I went to St. Matthew’s Chapel," Grace answered, her voice filling the quiet room. "Because I knew that was the only place where Luke would be. I knew if I could just get the yellow envelope into his hands, the truth would be safe."
"Objection!" Richard's lead defense attorney shouted, standing up frantically. "Speculation and emotional appeals!"
"Overruled," Judge Thorne stated coldly. "The witness is detailing her direct actions."
Reed turned toward the jury box—twelve men and women whose eyes were locked onto Grace with deep, profound sympathy and outrage.
"Your witness," Reed said, stepping back to her table.
Richard’s high-priced lead attorney stood up, straightening his cuffs, preparing to begin a grueling cross-examination. He took two steps toward the podium, clearing his throat. "Ms. Parker... you claim you were held against your will, yet hospital records show—"
He never finished the sentence.

Grace suddenly gasped softly, her hand pressing firmly against her lower abdomen. Her face went pale, a small, sharp gasp escaping her lips.
Luke stood up in the gallery instantly. "Grace!"
