Chapter 15 - The First SunriseThe delivery room on the fifth floor of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital was quiet, warm, and bathed in the soft, amber glow of the setting sun.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city skyline was painted in brilliant shades of rose, gold, and violet—the same city where six months ago, Grace had collapsed on a cold marble floor in torn clothes.

At 6:14 PM, a sharp, healthy cry rang out through the quiet room—a sound so pure, so full of fierce, stubborn life that it made Luke and Grace both break into tears of pure joy.

"It's a girl!" Dr. Vance announced with a bright, beaming smile, holding up a healthy, dark-haired seven-pound newborn before laying her gently on Grace’s chest. "A perfect, beautiful baby girl."

Grace wrapped her weak, trembling arms around her newborn daughter, burying her face against the baby's warm head, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated peace.

Luke dropped to his knees beside the hospital bed, his large hand gently cupping his daughter's tiny head, his thumb tracing her soft cheek.

"Hey, sweetheart," Luke whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion so deep it felt like it filled his whole chest. "I'm your daddy. You're safe now. You're home."

The door clicked open softly, and Sergeant Miller walked in, holding six-year-old Ava by the hand. The little girl had a giant pink ribbon in her hair and was clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit.

Ava’s eyes went wide as she looked at the tiny baby resting on Grace's chest. She stepped slowly toward the bed, climbing up onto the side stool with Luke's help.

"Is that my sister?" Ava whispered in awe.

"That's your baby sister, Ava," Grace smiled through her tears, pulling Ava close so she could touch the baby's tiny fingers. "What should we name her?"

Ava looked at the small girl, then out the window at the golden sunset illuminating the room, and finally up at Luke.

"Claire," Ava said happily. "Like the light!"

Luke looked at Grace, his eyes shining as he gently kissed Grace’s forehead, then Ava's, and finally the forehead of their newborn daughter.

"Claire Bennett," Luke whispered softly.

An hour later, Sergeant Miller received a text message on his phone. He stepped out into the hallway, read the screen, and walked back in with a quiet, satisfied smile.

"The jury returned a verdict twenty minutes after you left the courtroom, Luke," Miller reported quietly. "Guilty on all counts for Richard Whitmore, Brooke Whitmore, and Marcus Vance. Maximum sentencing guidelines."

Luke looked down at his family—at Grace sleeping peacefully with baby Claire in her arms, and Ava curled up fast asleep against his side.
