Chapter 13: The Rebuilding of Blackwood

With Sterling’s arrest and the court-ordered restitution complete, the true scale of my father’s legacy was revealed.
The private trust was fully recovered and reorganized under an independent corporate oversight board led by pristine financial auditors. The commercial real estate holdings, bank accounts, and international properties were legally transferred into a new, protected entity: The Hope Trust.
My first act as sole trustee was to sell the house where Arthur and Evelyn had trapped me.
On a bright morning in early spring, I stood on the sidewalk across the street, holding nine-month-old Hope in my arms. David stood beside me as a demolition crew swung a massive wrecking ball into the structure.
BOOM!
The walls of the garage—the cold concrete, the dark corners, the memory of the smoke and the lighter—collapsed into a cloud of harmless gray dust.
"Feeling okay?" David asked softly, glancing down at me.
"I feel like I can finally breathe," I smiled, watching the dust settle under the morning sun.
