Chapter 14: The Neighbor Across the Street

Summer returned to the city, washing the suburban streets in bright green leaves and warm afternoon sunshine.

In the backyard of David’s home—the place where forty-three videos had been recorded to save my life—a small gathering was underway. Detective Miller sat on the porch, enjoying a glass of iced tea, while little Hope crawled across the lush grass, chasing after a golden retriever puppy David had recently adopted.

I sat on the wooden bench under the oak tree, watching my daughter’s face light up with pure, unburdened joy. She was healthy, bright, and completely unaware of the darkness her mother had fought to keep away from her.

David walked over, setting two glasses of lemonade on the table before sitting down beside me.

"She’s getting fast," David laughed, pointing at Hope as she pulled herself up against the puppy’s back.

"She gets her strength from knowing she’s safe," I said softly, looking over at him. "David... I never really asked you. Why did you stay up every night watching that window? You could have turned away. You could have stayed out of it."

David looked out across the lawn, his eyes reflecting the soft sunlight. "My sister was in an abusive marriage years ago, Clara. Nobody listened to her. Nobody looked closely enough until it was too late. When I saw smoke coming from that window, I swore I wouldn't let another innocent person suffer in silence."

He reached out, his hand resting gently over mine on the wooden bench. "You saved yourself, Clara. I just held the light."
