Chapter 15: The Sound of the Wind

Two years later.

The ocean breeze blew softly across the high grass of the coastal cliff overlook. Below us, clear blue waves crashed rhythmically against the rocks, spraying white foam into the air.

I stood near the edge of the trail, wearing a simple white sundress. Beside me, three-year-old Hope was running happily along the path, holding David’s hand as they pointed at seagulls flying overhead.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small silver object—Arthur’s Zippo lighter, which had been returned to me as part of the closed evidence files months ago.

For years, the sound of that lighter clicking open had been the soundtrack of my nightmare. It had represented pain, fear, and the terrifying darkness of that cold garage.

I held the silver lighter in my palm, feeling its weight one last time.

Then, with a smooth, strong motion, I swung my arm back and threw it far out over the cliff edge.

I watched as the glinting piece of metal tumbled through the air, falling down, down, down into the roaring ocean below—swallowed forever by the vast, endless sea.

I didn't hear a click. I only heard the sound of the wind and my daughter’s laughter echoing across the hills.

"Mommy, look!" Hope cried out, running back toward me with her arms stretched wide, a dandelion clutched safely in her tiny fist. "Look what I found!"

I knelt down on the grass, opening my arms to catch her as she flew into my embrace. David walked up behind us, sliding a protective arm around my waist as we looked out toward the warm, golden horizon.

The fire had burned away the past, but it had failed to consume us. From the ashes of betrayal and pain, we had built a fortress of truth, love, and unbroken hope—a life that belonged entirely to us, forever free under the sky.
