Chapter 10 - The War for the CrownThe peace of the Westchester estate was shattered at 6:00 AM the following morning.

I awoke in the master bedroom—a room Gabriel had left untouched for five years—to the low, rhythmic thrum of helicopter blades overhead.
I threw on a robe and rushed down the grand staircase into the main foyer. Gabriel was already there, fully dressed in a dark charcoal suit, surrounded by six of his senior lieutenants. Marco was holding a encrypted satellite tablet, displaying real-time financial and political feeds.
"What's happening?" I asked, my heart pounding as I reached the bottom step.
Gabriel turned to me immediately. The soft, vulnerable man who had touched my face in the study last night was gone, replaced once again by the sovereign, terrifying leader of the Cross empire. But when his eyes met mine, the coldness vanished, replaced by an absolute, protective instinct.
"Senator Vale discovered that Serena was detained," Gabriel said calmly, walking toward me. "He tried to initiate a federal freeze on our logistics accounts an hour ago."
My blood ran cold. "Is he coming here?"
"He tried," Gabriel said, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corner of his lips. "He mobilized a federal tactical unit using a falsified warrant, claiming I was holding his daughter hostage."
"Gabriel!" I panicked, taking a step toward him. "The federal government—"
"Claire," Gabriel interrupted smoothly, taking both of my hands in his. "I told you last night that I've held an offshore ledger on Senator Vale for three years. Twenty minutes ago, my legal team delivered a copy of that ledger directly to the Director of the FBI and the Senate Ethics Committee."
I blinked, stunned. "You ruined him?"
"I destroyed him," Gabriel corrected softly. "By noon today, Senator Vale will be under federal arrest for treason, money laundering, and conspiracy. His tactical unit was recalled ten minutes ago. The Vale family is no longer a threat to us. To anyone."
I stared at him, breathless. In less than six hours, Gabriel had dismantled a United States Senator's political empire to protect three five-year-old boys and the woman he had divorced five years ago.
Before I could speak, heavy footsteps pattered down the grand marble staircase.
"Mom?"
We both looked up. Henry, Julian, and Ben were standing at the top of the stairs in their pajamas, rubbing their eyes, looking bewildered by the vastness of the estate and the men standing in the foyer.
Gabriel looked up at his three sons. The ruthless mafia boss who had just brought down a politician instantly dissolved. He let go of my hands and walked to the base of the stairs, looking up at them with a mixture of reverence and joy.
"Good morning, small ones," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into that gentle, low tone reserved only for them.
Julian looked over the marble banister, his eyes wide. "Is this a castle?"
"It's a home," Gabriel answered softly, his gray-green eyes turning to me as I walked up beside him. "If your mother decides to stay... it's our home."
Henry walked down two steps, his serious little face evaluating Gabriel once again. "Did you fix the bad people?"
Gabriel smiled—a real, radiant, unburdened smile that illuminated his sharp features. "I fixed them, Henry. No one is ever going to hurt you, your brothers, or your mother again."
Henry nodded once, satisfied with the answer. He walked down the remaining steps, followed by Julian and Ben. For the first time, without hesitation, all three boys walked up to Gabriel.
Ben reached out first, tugging at Gabriel’s silk tie. Gabriel immediately dropped to his knees, wrapping his powerful arms around all three of his sons, pulling them against his chest as tears unashamedly welled in his eyes.

I stood on the stairs, watching the man I had loved—the man who had broken my heart, protected me from the shadows, and fought his way back to us—holding our children in the morning light.
The five years of dark, quiet pain were finally over. The storm had passed, and for the first time in five years, the Cross family was whole.
