Chapter 20 - Three Heartbeats under the StarsSix months later.

A cool, crisp autumn night wrapped around the Westchester manor. The grand house was quiet, glowing with warm yellow light against the dark landscape.
Upstairs in the primary nursery suite, Henry, Julian, and Ben were tucked into their custom carved wooden beds. The glowing nightlight cast soft star patterns across the high ceiling.
Gabriel and I sat on the edge of Ben’s bed.
"Dad?" Ben murmured, rubbing his sleepy gray-green eyes.
"Yes, small one?" Gabriel asked softly, leaning over to smooth the blanket over his shoulders.
"Will you be here when we wake up tomorrow?"
Gabriel smiled—a soft, beautiful smile that had long since replaced the cold mask he used to wear. He leaned down, pressing a kiss to Ben's forehead, then to Julian's, and finally to Henry's.
"I will be here tomorrow," Gabriel promised, his voice rich with absolute certainty. "And the day after that. And every day for the rest of your lives. Nothing in this world will ever take me away from you again."
"Okay," Ben whispered happily, turning onto his side and closing his eyes. Within minutes, the rhythmic, peaceful breathing of three sleeping children filled the room.
Gabriel took my hand, lacing his long fingers through mine, and we quietly stepped out into the hallway, leaving the nursery door slightly ajar.
We walked out onto the second-floor master balcony, overlooking the moonlit grounds, the blooming rose garden, and the shimmering waters of the Sound in the distance. The cool night air stirred my hair, and Gabriel wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling me snug against his chest.
I placed my hands over his arms, leaning my head back against his shoulder.
"What are you thinking about?" Gabriel whispered against my neck, his lips brushing my skin.
"I'm thinking about the day I sat in that doctor's office in Boston," I admitted softly, looking up at the stars. "I was so terrified, Gabriel. I listened to three tiny heartbeats flickering on a cold screen, and I thought I was completely alone in the world."
Gabriel tightened his grip around me, resting his cheek against mine.
"You were never alone, Claire," Gabriel murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "Those three heartbeats carried us back to each other. They brought light into my darkness, and they built a family out of a broken empire."
I turned in his arms, wrapping my hands around his neck, looking into the gray-green eyes that had once frightened me, but now held everything I loved in this life.
"I love you, Gabriel," I whispered.
"I love you, Claire," he replied, leaning down to kiss me under the starlit sky. "Forever."

Below us, the iron gates of the estate remained closed—not to keep the world out, but to keep the warmth, the laughter, and the unshakeable love of our family safe inside.
