Chapter 11 - The Shadow on the Wall

The news of Senator Vale’s sudden arrest sent shockwaves through both legitimate political circles and the underworld. By mid-afternoon, news broadcasts were speculating on the mysterious whistleblower who had dismantled the senator's empire overnight.

Inside the Westchester estate, however, the world was remarkably quiet.

Gabriel spent the morning in his glass-walled office off the main courtyard, but for the first time in his life, his door remained wide open. Every twenty minutes, he would pause his low-toned phone calls with lawyers and lieutenants to look out into the hallway, verifying that the boys were still there.

Henry, Julian, and Ben were exploring the ground floor under the watchful, delighted eyes of Mrs. Gable. They ran along the Persian rugs, their socks sliding across the polished hardwood, their innocent laughter echoing through halls that had been silent for half a decade.

I sat on the velvet sofa in the sunroom, watching Gabriel through the glass. He had discarded his suit jacket and rolled his sleeves up to his elbows.

"You're watching him like you expect him to vanish," Gabriel’s voice startled me slightly as he stepped out of his office, holding two porcelain mugs of tea.

"Five years of habit is hard to break," I replied, taking a mug from him. "For five years, I woke up every day knowing exactly what my life looked like. Today, I feel like I'm standing on shifting sand."

Gabriel sat beside me, keeping a respectful distance. "The sand isn't shifting, Claire. The foundation is solid now. The Vales are finished. My father's old enemies are either dead or neutralized. There is no one left to hide you from."

"And what about us?" I asked, looking into my tea. "You built a fortress to protect us, Gabriel, but a fortress isn't a marriage. We aren't the same people we were five years ago."

Gabriel’s gray-green eyes grew intensely serious. "I don't expect us to be. The man you married was an arrogant fool who thought love meant giving orders and keeping secrets. I don't want our old marriage back, Claire. I want to build something new. Something where you are my equal in every single room."

Before I could answer, a loud crash echoed from the foyer, followed by a sudden, sharp gasp from Mrs. Gable.
