Chapter 12 - The Mother's ConfessionTwo weeks before the trial date, my mother sat across from me on the back patio of the Santa Cruz safe house. The Pacific Ocean shimmered in the distance beneath a blanket of grey mist, and the smell of wet redwood needles hung heavy in the mountain air.

Teresa held a ceramic mug of hot tea between her hands, her eyes fixed on the wooden deck table.
"I didn't know about the offshore accounts, Valeria," she whispered, her voice cracking slightly. "I swear to you... I knew he was ambitious. I knew he was proud. But whenever I asked about our finances, he told me that managing money was a man's burden, and that my only job was to keep a clean house and a respectable face."
"He kept you trapped too, Mom," I said gently. It was the first time I had called her that since waking up in the hospital.
Teresa looked up, tears brimming in her eyes. "He built a cage out of gold, and I polished the bars for him. When he bought me clothes, when he gave me jewelry, when he paraded me in front of his business associates... I thought that was love. I didn't realize it was just ownership."

"You survived it," I said, reaching across the table to place my hand over hers. Her skin felt paper-thin and cold. "And you walked away when it mattered."
"Because of you," Teresa whispered, squeezing my fingers with a sudden, fierce strength. "You had the courage I lost thirty years ago. Don't ever let anyone tell you that you're weak, Valeria. You are the strongest person I have ever known."
