Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum"Why are you calling me, Hector?" I asked, my voice steady, my phone held propped against a stack of folders so I wouldn't strain my wrist.

"I’m offering you a settlement," my father said flatly, as if he were negotiating a lease contract across a boardroom table.

A cold, bitter laugh escaped my throat. "A settlement? You're facing attempted murder, domestic abuse, and federal racketeering. You don't have anything to negotiate with."

"Don't be naive, Valeria," Hector sneered, leaning closer to the camera. "You think you're safe sitting in that house in the woods? You think Sarah Lin and Ethan Cole care about you? They care about a headline. They care about putting a high-profile developer in a cage so they can get promoted."

"They care about justice," I replied.

"Justice doesn't pay for your medical bills!" Hector snapped, his hand slamming onto the metal counter on his side of the glass. "Justice doesn't rebuild your life when this is over! Listen to me very carefully. My legal defense team has already established a comprehensive defense strategy. We are going to paint your mother as an unstable, pill-dependent spouse who concocted this entire scheme to claim full marital assets in a divorce."

I felt a sudden, burning heat rise in my chest. "She didn't do anything!"

"It doesn't matter what she did!" Hector growled. "It matters what twelve jurors in a court room believe! I have three character witnesses—former mayors, city council members, judges—who will testify under oath that I was at a charity fundraiser forty minutes before you were found in the garage. My lawyers will tear your memory to pieces on the stand. They will bring up your history of concussion therapy, your anti-anxiety prescriptions... they will make you look like a confused, vengeful daughter trying to destroy her family for money."

He leaned in so close his face filled the entire screen.

"Sign an affidavit stating that your statement to the police was given while under the influence of severe head trauma and ICU narcotics," Hector offered, his voice dropping into a dangerous, persuasive whisper. "In exchange, I will execute an irrevocable trust transferring $3 million to your personal account tomorrow morning. Your mother gets the house. You get your life back. Refuse... and I will destroy both of you in open court."

I looked at the man in the orange jumpsuit.

I looked at his manicured nails, his cold, calculating eyes, his total inability to feel a single shred of guilt for shattering my bones or spitting on my life.

I reached out my right hand, placing my thumb directly over the red disconnect button on the screen.

"You spent twenty-eight years teaching me how to analyze spreadsheets, Hector," I said softly, my voice completely devoid of fear. "You taught me that when a bad asset threatens the entire system, you liquidate it. You're the bad asset."

I tapped the screen. The connection terminated instantly, blacking out his furious face.

I looked at Detective Cole and ADA Lin.

"Add attempted witness intimidation to the docket," I said flatly. "And tell the grand jury I'm ready to testify."
