Chapter 17 - The Defense's CollapseOn the third day of the trial, the defense called its key character witness: Arthur Pendelton, a former municipal zoning board commissioner who had long supported my father's commercial projects.

Pendelton took the stand, attempting to portray Hector as a dedicated philanthropist and community leader whose business dealings were entirely above board.

"Mr. Santos is a man of deep civic pride," Pendelton testified under direct examination. "He supported local youth programs, funded municipal renovations, and always maintained the highest standards of integrity."

When ADA Sarah Lin stood up for cross-examination, she carried a single blue folder from our evidence box.

"Mr. Pendelton," Sarah said smoothly, pulling a printed wire transfer document from the folder. "On June 14th of last year, a payment of fifty thousand dollars was transferred from Santos International Holdings LLC into an account registered under Pendelton Consulting Services. Can you tell the court what services were rendered for that payment?"

Pendelton’s face drained of color. He looked at Hector, then at Marcus Vance, his mouth working silently.

"I... I provided strategic advisory services," Pendelton stammered.

"Strategic advisory services?" Sarah pressed, stepping closer to the witness box. "Or was that payment executed forty-eight hours before your board approved the North First Street commercial zoning variance despite three outstanding environmental violations?"

"Objection!" Vance called out, half-rising from his chair.

"Overruled," Judge Sterling declared firmly. "The witness will answer."

Pendelton swallowed hard, sweating under the bright courtroom lights. "I... I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may incriminate me."

A sharp murmur rippled across the jury box. The defense's narrative of civic virtue and false allegations crumbled in a matter of minutes.
