Chapter 18 - The VerdictThe jury deliberated for less than four hours.

At 3:15 PM on a crisp Friday afternoon, the bailiff summoned all parties back into Department 14.

My mother and I sat side by side in the second row of the public gallery, our hands linked tightly. Across the aisle, Hector stood between his two attorneys, his jaw rigid, his posture forced upright as if sheer willpower could alter the outcome.

Judge Sterling looked at the foreperson, a retired high school teacher sitting in the front row.

"Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?" Judge Sterling asked.

"We have, Your Honor," the foreperson answered, opening the official document.

The courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless hush.

"On Count 1, Attempted First-Degree Murder, we find the defendant, Hector Santos, guilty."

My mother let out a quiet, trembling breath beside me.

"On Count 2, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, guilty. On Count 3, Federal Wire Fraud and Corporate Conversion, guilty. On Count 4, Witness Intimidation and Public Corruption, guilty."

The foreperson handed the verdict forms back to the clerk.

Judge Sterling looked at Hector. "The defendant will remain remanded in high-security custody without bail until sentencing."

Hector didn't shout. He didn't turn to look at his defense team. As the sheriff's deputies stepped forward and clicked the steel handcuffs around his wrists, his eyes swept slowly over the courtroom until they landed on me.

For the first time in twenty-eight years, I saw something new in my father's eyes.
