CHAPTER 5: SMOKE AND BADGES

Two muscular guards in black suits charged toward me.

I didn't move. I reached into my clutch, pulled out a small silver remote, and pressed the red center button.

BOOM!

A deafening explosion rocked the far side of the estate, blowing out the windows of the family garage and sending a massive plume of black smoke into the afternoon sky. The shockwave rattled the terrace glassware, causing guests to scream and scatter toward the exits in a blind panic.

Before the guards could recover, the heavy iron gates at the perimeter burst open.

Four black SUVs slammed to a halt on the manicured lawn. Armed federal agents spilled out, weapons raised, their tactical vests bearing bold gold letters: FBI.

"Eleanor Vance! Julian Vance!" a voice boomed through a megaphone. "Stay where you are! Hands where we can see them!"

Eleanor dropped her phone, stumbling backward into Julian’s arms as agents flooded the terrace, zip-tying the security guards and surrounding the head table.

I wiped the last trace of dressing from my cheek with the back of my hand, looking down at Eleanor one last time.

"Your time is up," I whispered.

I turned on my heel and walked calmly toward the main gates, stepping past screaming guests and tactical teams. But as I reached the lead SUV, a tall man in a dark tailored trench coat stepped out of the passenger side, blocking my path.

He didn't wear a badge.

He reached up and slid off his aviator sunglasses, revealing sharp, familiar icy-blue eyes.

"You executed the plan perfectly, Clara," the man said softly, a dark smirk playing on his lips. "Except for one detail."

May you like

My heart stopped. The flash drive slipped from my fingers and clattered onto the stone pavement.

"Father?" I choked out.
