Chapter 10 - The Sovereign HorizonSix Months Later

The morning sun over downtown Houston was bright, warm, and entirely unobstructed by clouds.
I stood on the balcony of my penthouse apartment on the fortieth floor, holding a cup of black coffee, looking out over the sprawling, pulsing expanse of the city skyline.
Down on the street below, the morning commuter traffic moved in an endless, rhythmic flow. But none of those cars were driving in fear. None of those workers were wondering if their hard-earned labor was going to be stolen by the people who claimed to love them.
Behind me, the glass door slid open, and Lily stepped out onto the balcony, wearing her high school graduation cap and gown, holding a diploma folder in her hands with a radiant, beaming smile.
"Brandon!" Lily called out, laughing. "The catering truck just arrived downstairs! Marcus and Sarah are already setting up the food in the living room!"
I turned around, smiling warmly as I walked over to my sister and adjusted the golden honor cord hanging around her neck.
"Look at you, graduate," I said, my voice filled with profound pride. "Next stop, University of Texas."
"And my tuition account is fully funded, verified, and completely secure," Lily recited proudly, tapping her temple. "Thanks to the best brother in the state."
My phone vibrated in my pocket.
I pulled it out and saw a notification from Vanguard Logistics' legal compliance portal:“Case Closed: State of Texas v. Richard & Eleanor Carter — Final Judgment Rendered. Ten years federal and state penitentiary custody without parole.”
I locked my phone, slipped it back into my pocket, and looked out over the sparkling city.
They thought they could take my paycheck. They thought they could break my spirit with a slammed head against a dining room table, humiliation, and decades of emotional abuse.

They never knew what I had been building in silence.
"Come on, graduate," I said, putting my arm around Lily's shoulders and guiding her back inside toward the sunlight. "Let's celebrate our future."
