Chapter 13 - The University MilestoneBy the following spring, Lily completed her freshman year at the University of Texas at Austin with a 3.9 GPA, majoring in corporate finance and public policy.

On a warm Friday evening in May, Lily and I sat together at an upscale outdoor terrace restaurant overlooking the Austin skyline, celebrating the end of her first successful year of college.
She wore a simple denim jacket over a white sundress, laughing as she recounted a particularly disastrous group project involving three economics majors who had no idea how to format an Excel spreadsheet.
"Can you believe some kids in my dorm still ask their parents for permission to buy groceries?" Lily laughed, shaking her head. "I mean, I'm literally managing my own housing trust, my tuition, and my meal plan, and my roommate is crying because her dad cut off her allowance for buying a designer purse."
I smiled, taking a sip of my sparkling water. "Different houses teach different lessons, Lily."
She stopped laughing, her dark eyes softening as she looked across the table at me.
"Brandon," she said quietly, her voice losing its playful edge. "I went to visit Mom in the women's facility in Corsicana last weekend."
I paused, setting my glass down on the wooden table. "Why did you go?"
"I don't know," Lily admitted, tracing the rim of her water glass with her finger. "I guess... I just wanted to see if she had changed. If she realized what she did to us."
"And?" I asked gently.
"She hasn't changed at all," Lily whispered, a sad, resigned smile touching her lips. "Within five minutes, she was complaining about how the prison uniforms are poorly tailored, how the other inmates don't respect her social standing, and how you ruined her life by freezing her accounts."
Lily looked up, meeting my eyes with absolute, unwavering clarity.
"That was the moment I realized," Lily continued softly, "that I don't owe her anything. Not my time, not my guilt, and certainly not my future. I have you. I have my own life. And I'm never looking back."

I reached across the table, taking my sister's hand and squeezing it tightly.
"You never owed them anything, Lily," I told her, my voice full of profound pride. "You're a Carter by blood, but you're a survivor by choice."
