Chapter 17 - The Warehouse District VisitOn a quiet Friday afternoon, I drove my car away from the glittering glass towers of downtown Houston and headed toward the industrial warehouse district on the city's east side.

Ten minutes later, I parked outside Vanguard Logistics' primary secondary distribution and inventory warehouse—a sprawling, high-efficiency facility where raw supply-chain data met physical freight management.
I walked through the double doors, stepping onto the polished concrete floor where forklifts hummed quietly in the background and dozens of data coordinators sat at modular desks managing regional shipping manifests.
At a desk near the back, wearing a simple blue corporate polo shirt and safety glasses, Madison Carter was methodically cross-referencing a digital inventory spreadsheet.
She looked older, her bleach-blonde hair dyed back to its natural warm brown, her designer sunglasses long since gone. There was a quiet, focused competence about her that I hadn't seen when she lived in our parents' house.
As I walked down the aisle, she looked up from her monitor and froze.
She stood up quickly, smoothing her shirt. "Brandon. I... I wasn't expecting you today."
"Just dropping off some compliance audit logs for the regional supervisor," I said calmly, holding up a manila folder. "How are the inventory metrics looking, Madison?"
She looked down at her screen, then back up at me, a faint, self-aware smile touching her lips. "Ninety-eight point four percent accuracy rate this quarter. No discrepancies."
"Good," I said, setting the folder on the edge of her desk. "Your supervisor tells me you're up for promotion to senior inventory manager next month."
Madison blinked, a flash of genuine pride and humility crossing her eyes. "I... I earned it. By myself. Without asking anyone for a handout or a bailout."
"Yes, you did," I told her, my voice entirely level and sincere. "You built a real career with your own hands, Madison. That's something nobody can ever take away from you."
May you like
She swallowed hard, her eyes glistening slightly. "Thank you, Brandon. For not giving up on me when I was completely worthless."
"I didn't give up on you," I replied softly, turning back toward the exit. "I just stopped letting you live off someone else's labor. Welcome to the real world, Madison."
