Chapter 2: The Secret File in the Library

Chapter 2: The Secret File in the Library

The first police vehicles arrived at Whitmore Estate twelve minutes after Eleanor’s phone call.

The sound of approaching sirens cut through the silence of the mansion.

For the first time that evening, Clara Whitmore’s confident expression began to crack.

She had expected an ambulance.

She had expected sympathy.

She had expected everyone to look at Eleanor as the dangerous woman who had attacked her.

She had not expected a full investigation.

“What is happening?” Clara asked, forcing a confused expression.

Arthur Collins looked toward the front entrance as uniformed officers entered the estate.

“Detective Bennett requested immediate assistance,” one officer said.

Clara froze.

Detective Bennett.

The name was familiar.

Everyone in powerful circles knew Thomas Bennett.

He was the detective who had exposed a corporate fraud network involving billion-dollar accounts.

The investigator who had spent years patiently collecting evidence while criminals celebrated their victories.

Clara swallowed.

But only for a second.

Then she recovered.

“Why would Detective Bennett be involved?” she asked.

Her voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

A young officer noticed.

Most innocent people wanted answers.

They wanted reassurance.

They wanted someone to explain why their world had suddenly collapsed.

Clara looked different.

She looked like someone trying to understand how much damage had already been done.

A few minutes later, the mansion doors opened.

Detective Thomas Bennett walked inside.

He was in his late fifties, with silver hair, sharp eyes, and the quiet confidence of someone who had spent decades reading people's lies.

He looked around the room.

He didn't look at Clara first.

He looked at Eleanor.

Medical staff were checking her condition.

“She and the baby are stable,” the paramedic announced.

Everyone released a breath.

Except Clara.

Because Bennett smiled slightly.

Not because he was happy.

Because he knew.

The plan had worked.

Eleanor slowly opened her eyes.

“Detective,” she whispered.

Bennett nodded.

“Mrs. Vale.”

Clara immediately stepped forward.

“Detective, I don't understand why you are treating me like a criminal.”

Bennett turned toward her.

“I didn't say you were a criminal.”

Clara relaxed slightly.

Then he continued.

“Not yet.”

The room became silent.

Arthur looked uncomfortable.

“Detective, Clara claims Eleanor attacked her.”

Bennett looked at him.

“Yes.”

“And?”

“And I believe Clara is telling the truth about one thing.”

Everyone waited.

“What thing?”

Bennett glanced toward Eleanor.

“She was attacked.”

The room went quiet.

Clara smiled faintly.

Exactly.

That was what she wanted.

But Bennett continued.

“She just wasn't attacked by Eleanor.”

The smile disappeared.

A cold feeling moved through Clara's chest.

“What are you suggesting?”

“I’m suggesting,” Bennett said calmly, “that tonight’s event was carefully planned.”

He reached into his folder and removed several photographs.

“Before anyone touched that staircase, investigators already collected evidence.”

He placed the photos on the table.

The first image showed the marble staircase.

The second showed a small mark near the railing.

The third showed a broken decorative piece hidden behind the curtains.

Arthur leaned closer.

“What is that?”

“A modified support bracket,” Bennett answered.

Everyone stared.

“The railing was loosened.”

A shocked whisper moved through the room.

Bennett continued.

“Someone created a situation where a person standing near the staircase would appear to fall after a struggle.”

Clara immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice became louder.

“That doesn't prove anything.”

“No,” Bennett agreed.

“It doesn't.”

Then he placed another file on the table.

“But this might.”

The folder was old.

Brown.

Dust-covered.

On the front was written:

WHITMORE FAMILY TRUST — CONFIDENTIAL

Arthur’s face changed.

“That file was supposed to be locked away.”

Bennett looked at him.

“Exactly.”

Clara’s breathing became heavier.

Because she knew what was inside.

For months, Eleanor had been investigating strange changes in the family’s financial records.

Millions of dollars had disappeared from the Whitmore trust.

But every document pointed toward one person.

Eleanor.

Someone had been carefully building evidence to make it appear that she was stealing from the family.

Someone wanted her removed.

Someone wanted her reputation destroyed.

Bennett opened the file.

“Inside this folder are altered contracts, fake signatures, and transferred accounts.”

He looked around the room.

“And every document was created using information only a few people in this house could access.”

Arthur slowly looked at Clara.

She noticed.

And anger flashed in her eyes.

“You think I did this?”

Bennett didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into another envelope.

“This was found hidden inside the Whitmore library.”

Clara stopped breathing.

The library.

Nobody was supposed to know.

That room had been her secret.

A place where she stored everything she needed.

Bennett removed a small USB drive.

“On this device are recordings.”

Clara’s face went pale.

“What recordings?”

Bennett looked directly at her.

“The conversations of the person who planned Eleanor Vale’s downfall.”

Silence filled the mansion.

Then suddenly—

A phone began ringing.

Everyone turned.

The sound came from Clara’s handbag.

Her eyes widened.

“No…”

She grabbed the bag quickly.

Too quickly.

Bennett noticed.

“Interesting.”

Clara stared at the phone screen.

One unknown number.

One message.

Only three words.

THEY KNOW EVERYTHING.

Her hands began trembling.

Because whoever sent that message was not warning her.

They were abandoning her.

And Clara finally understood something terrifying.

She was not the mastermind.

She was only a piece on the board.

Someone much more powerful had been controlling everything from the beginning.

Bennett stepped closer.

“Clara Whitmore…”

His voice was calm.

“Who told you to push Eleanor?”

Clara looked up.

For the first time that night, the perfect actress disappeared.

Fear replaced it.

Because she knew the truth.

The person who had ordered the attack was watching.

May you like

And if she spoke…

She would become the next victim.
