Chapter 6: The Daughter of the Empire

Chapter 6: The Daughter of the Empire
The sound of the locked door echoed through the underground archive.
Everyone turned toward the staircase.
The heavy metal lock had been activated from the outside.
Someone had trapped them.
Arthur rushed toward the door.
“No…”
He pulled the handle.
Nothing happened.
“Open the door!” he shouted.
Only silence answered.
Eleanor stood frozen, still holding the letter from her mother.
Her entire life had just changed.
For years, she believed she was Eleanor Vale.
A woman with no connection to the Whitmore empire.
A woman who married into the family.
A woman who was always treated like an outsider.
But now…
Everything she knew was a lie.
“My father is Victor Whitmore?”
Her voice was barely audible.
Detective Bennett looked at her carefully.
“We need to be careful.”
“Careful?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“My whole life was built on a lie.”
Bennett understood her anger.
But he also understood something else.
Someone wanted her to discover this.
The letter.
The archive.
The recording.
Every piece of the puzzle had been placed in front of them.
“This was a message,” Bennett said.
Eleanor looked at him.
“From Victor?”
“Yes.”
“But he’s dead.”
Bennett looked at the locked door.
“Are you sure?”
Nobody answered.
Because after everything they had discovered tonight, nothing seemed impossible anymore.
Arthur slowly sat down.
His hands were shaking.
“I should have told you.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Told me what?”
Arthur looked ashamed.
“About your mother.”
The room became quiet.
“After she disappeared, Victor made everyone believe she abandoned you.”
Eleanor’s expression changed.
“She didn’t?”
“No.”
Arthur looked at the old photographs surrounding them.
“She loved you more than anything.”
“Then why did she leave?”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Because she was running.”
“From Victor?”
Arthur hesitated.
“From someone much more dangerous.”
Bennett stepped closer.
“Who?”
Arthur looked toward the shelves of documents.
“I don't know.”
That answer frustrated Eleanor.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“You worked for this family for thirty years.”
“Yes.”
“Then why don’t you know?”
Arthur looked at her with sadness.
“Because Victor was not the only person keeping secrets.”
Suddenly, the archive lights flickered.
Everyone turned.
The old computer system on the far wall powered on by itself.
A screen appeared.
A video file opened automatically.
The title read:
FOR ELEANOR — WHEN THE TIME COMES
Her breath stopped.
“My mother…”
Bennett approached the computer.
“Someone prepared this.”
He pressed play.
The screen showed a woman sitting in a small room.
Eleanor recognized her immediately.
Her mother.
Twenty-five years younger.
Alive.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“My beautiful Eleanor,” the woman said.
The room became completely silent.
“If you are watching this, then you are old enough to know the truth.”
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Her mother continued.
“I need you to understand something. The Whitmore name carries power, but it also carries darkness.”
She paused.
“Your father, Victor, was not the monster everyone believes.”
Bennett watched carefully.
“Then who was?”
The recording continued.
“Victor made mistakes. Terrible mistakes. But he was trying to protect our family from someone who wanted everything he built.”
A document appeared on the screen.
A name was visible.
Alexander Whitmore.
Arthur’s face turned pale.
“No…”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Who is Alexander?”
Arthur didn't answer.
Bennett looked at the screen.
“Another Whitmore?”
Arthur slowly nodded.
“Victor’s older brother.”
“But I thought Victor founded the company.”
“He did.”
Arthur’s voice became quieter.
“But Alexander believed the empire belonged to him.”
The video continued.
Eleanor’s mother looked directly into the camera.
“Alexander will do anything to gain control.”
A pause.
“Even destroy his own family.”
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then Bennett’s phone rang.
He answered immediately.
“Bennett.”
A voice came through.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He listened.
Then looked at Eleanor.
“Say that again.”
A pause.
Then:
“You found him?”
Everyone stared.
Bennett slowly lowered the phone.
“What happened?” Eleanor asked.
His face was serious.
“We found Victor Whitmore.”
Arthur stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.”
Bennett looked toward the sealed door.
“No.”
His voice became quiet.
“It’s not.”
“Where?”
Bennett looked at Eleanor.
“He’s alive.”
A cold silence filled the archive.
“Where is he?” she asked.
Bennett answered:
“Less than three miles from here.”
Eleanor’s heart raced.
“Where?”
Bennett hesitated.
Then said:
“In the old Whitmore family cemetery.”
Everyone froze.
The place where Victor Whitmore was buried.
The place where he was supposed to have died.
Bennett looked at the locked door.
Someone had trapped them here.
Someone wanted them delayed.
May you like
Because whatever they were about to discover outside…
Someone was desperate to stop them.
