Chapter 9: The Last Move of a Dead Man

Chapter 9: The Last Move of a Dead Man
The photograph appeared on every phone screen at the same time.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Because the message was impossible.
ALEXANDER WHITMORE.
Alive.
Inside the estate.
Smiling.
Detective Bennett stared at the image.
His instincts immediately took over.
“Everyone back to the mansion.”
The officers moved quickly.
Victor remained frozen.
For the first time since they found him, he looked genuinely afraid.
Eleanor noticed.
“You’re scared of him.”
Victor looked at her.
“Yes.”
The answer surprised her.
“Why?”
Victor looked toward the dark trees.
“Because Alexander doesn’t want the empire.”
“Then what does he want?”
Victor’s expression became painful.
“Revenge.”
The group returned to Whitmore Estate within minutes.
The mansion looked exactly the same.
Elegant.
Beautiful.
Peaceful.
But everyone knew better now.
The walls were full of secrets.
The floors were hiding evidence.
And somewhere inside…
Alexander Whitmore was waiting.
Bennett raised his hand.
Everyone stopped.
“No one enters alone.”
The officers surrounded the mansion.
The front doors opened slowly.
Nobody touched them.
They had been unlocked.
A message.
An invitation.
Inside the entrance hall, a single table had been prepared.
On it was a glass of wine.
Two chairs.
And a handwritten note.
Eleanor picked it up.
Her hands tightened.
“What does it say?”
She read it aloud.
“Dear Eleanor,
You spent your entire life believing you were a victim.
Tonight, you will finally understand that you were the key.”
Nobody spoke.
Bennett took the paper.
“He wants us to follow his script.”
Victor looked around.
“He always did.”
A voice suddenly echoed from the upper floor.
“Still pretending you know everything, Victor?”
Everyone looked up.
A man stood on the balcony.
Older.
Silver-haired.
Calm.
Alexander Whitmore.
Alive.
The officers immediately aimed their weapons.
Alexander smiled.
“Interesting.”
“You all look exactly as I expected.”
Bennett stepped forward.
“Alexander Whitmore.”
The man smiled.
“Detective Bennett.”
“You’re under arrest.”
Alexander laughed softly.
“Do you really think I would come here without a plan?”
Bennett remained calm.
“You’re surrounded.”
“No.”
Alexander looked at Eleanor.
“I’m exactly where I want to be.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“Why?”
Alexander looked at her.
“Because you finally have the truth.”
“You destroyed my family.”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed toward Victor.
“He did.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Alexander smiled.
“Of course he says that.”
He walked down the stairs slowly.
“Victor spent decades pretending he was a hero.”
He looked at Eleanor.
“But your father built his empire by destroying people.”
Eleanor looked at Victor.
“Is that true?”
Victor remained silent.
And that silence was enough.
Alexander continued.
“Your mother discovered everything.”
“What?”
“She discovered how Victor created the Whitmore fortune.”
Victor interrupted.
“Enough.”
But Alexander continued.
“She found the original records.”
He looked at Bennett.
“Illegal acquisitions. Manipulated contracts. People forced out of their businesses.”
Bennett looked at Victor.
“Is this true?”
Victor looked exhausted.
“Yes.”
Eleanor felt betrayed.
“You lied to everyone.”
Victor looked at her.
“I made mistakes.”
“Mistakes?”
Her voice cracked.
“You let me believe I had no family.”
Victor lowered his eyes.
“Because I thought it would keep you safe.”
Alexander laughed.
“Safe?”
He looked around.
“She was never safe.”
The room became silent.
Then Alexander pulled out a small device.
Everyone reacted.
Bennett immediately stepped forward.
“What is that?”
Alexander smiled.
“The final piece.”
He pressed a button.
The mansion screens turned on.
A video appeared.
It showed Eleanor’s mother.
But this time, the message was different.
Her mother looked frightened.
“If you are watching this…”
She paused.
“Then Alexander has already found you.”
Eleanor moved closer.
Her mother continued.
“Eleanor, there is something I never told you.”
A tear rolled down her face.
“Your father did not abandon me.”
Victor looked shocked.
The video continued.
“He tried to save me.”
Everyone looked at Victor.
“But someone betrayed us.”
The screen showed a document.
A signature.
Arthur Collins.
The room went silent.
Arthur looked devastated.
“No…”
Alexander smiled.
“Now everyone knows.”
Bennett looked at him.
“You manipulated Arthur.”
Alexander shrugged.
“Everyone has a weakness.”
Eleanor stared at Alexander.
“You destroyed all these lives.”
Alexander looked at her.
“No.”
He smiled.
“I corrected history.”
He stepped closer.
“You are the rightful owner of everything.”
A pause.
“And I am the only person who can help you control it.”
Eleanor looked disgusted.
“You think after everything, I would trust you?”
Alexander smiled.
“That’s the problem with you, Eleanor.”
“What?”
“You still believe truth matters more than power.”
Suddenly, every light in the mansion turned red.
An alarm began to sound.
Bennett looked around.
“What did you do?”
Alexander smiled.
“The final stage.”
“What final stage?”
Alexander looked at Eleanor.
“The stage where the Whitmore empire burns…”
A pause.
“…and only one person survives.”
The sound of fire alarms filled the mansion.
Smoke began rising from the lower floors.
Everyone realized the truth.
May you like
Alexander had not come to claim the empire.
He had come to destroy it.
