Chapter 8: The Betrayal Inside the House

Chapter 8: The Betrayal Inside the House

The figure stepped slowly out of the darkness.

Nobody moved.

The officers aimed their weapons.

Detective Bennett narrowed his eyes.

Because the person standing in front of them was not a stranger.

It was someone they had trusted.

Someone who had been present when Eleanor fell.

Someone who had watched the entire performance unfold.

Arthur Collins.

The longtime house manager.

The man who had served the Whitmore family for thirty years.

Eleanor stared at him.

“No…”

Arthur’s face was filled with sadness.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Sadness.

“I’m sorry, Eleanor.”

Her heart sank.

“Arthur?”

Victor looked at him with disappointment.

“I knew there was someone helping Alexander.”

Arthur lowered his eyes.

“You always thought you were smarter than everyone else, Victor.”

The words shocked everyone.

Bennett stepped forward.

“So you were the one giving Alexander information.”

Arthur didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Clara, still standing with the officers, looked horrified.

“You?”

Arthur looked at her.

“You were only a distraction.”

Clara’s face changed.

A painful realization.

“All this time…”

Arthur ignored her.

“The plan was never about making Clara powerful.”

He looked at Eleanor.

“It was about making everyone believe she was responsible.”

Eleanor felt anger rising.

“You helped destroy my life.”

Arthur looked away.

“I protected this family.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“No.”

“You protected yourself.”

Arthur’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to judge me.”

Victor stepped forward.

“You betrayed my wife.”

The cemetery went silent.

Eleanor looked at him.

“My mother?”

Arthur said nothing.

Victor continued.

“Twenty-five years ago, my wife discovered Alexander’s crimes.”

Arthur’s face changed.

“She was going to expose him.”

Bennett listened carefully.

“And you stopped her.”

Arthur’s silence became an answer.

Eleanor felt as if the ground beneath her had disappeared.

“You knew what happened to my mother?”

Arthur looked at her.

His eyes were full of regret.

“I never wanted her hurt.”

“But she disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“Because of you.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“I made a mistake.”

“A mistake?”

Eleanor’s voice shook.

“You took away my mother.”

Arthur looked broken.

“I thought I was saving the family.”

Victor stepped closer.

“You were saving your position.”

Arthur finally lost control.

“You think you’re better than me?”

His voice became angry.

“You and Alexander are the same.”

Everyone froze.

Victor frowned.

“What?”

Arthur laughed.

“For decades, you both fought over power while ordinary people like me cleaned up your mess.”

Bennett watched him carefully.

This was not just guilt.

This was years of resentment.

“You were never loyal,” Victor said.

Arthur looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I was patient.”

Then he pulled something from his coat.

Everyone reacted instantly.

But it was not a weapon.

It was a small envelope.

Arthur held it up.

“The final document.”

Bennett’s eyes narrowed.

“What document?”

“The one Alexander wanted.”

Eleanor stared.

“What is it?”

Arthur smiled sadly.

“The document that proves who truly owns the Whitmore empire.”

Victor looked at him.

“You found it.”

“Yes.”

“And you hid it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Arthur looked at Eleanor.

“Because I realized too late that Alexander planned to remove everyone.”

Clara looked confused.

“Then why help him?”

Arthur’s expression changed.

“Because I had no choice.”

The wind moved through the cemetery.

Bennett stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Arthur looked toward the darkness.

“He has my daughter.”

The words shocked everyone.

“What?”

Arthur’s hands trembled.

“Alexander kidnapped her.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”

Arthur looked at him.

“Because Alexander said if I betrayed him, she would disappear forever.”

The silence that followed was heavy.

Eleanor’s anger faded slightly.

Not because she forgave him.

But because she understood.

Arthur had been trapped.

Just like Clara.

Just like everyone else.

Bennett looked toward the forest.

“So Alexander is still alive.”

Arthur nodded.

“And he has been controlling everything.”

Victor looked at Eleanor.

“Where is the trust document?”

Arthur slowly handed the envelope to Eleanor.

She opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Her eyes moved across the words.

Then she froze.

“What?”

Bennett looked at her.

“What does it say?”

Eleanor looked up.

Her face had gone pale.

“The Whitmore empire…”

She swallowed.

“Was never inherited by Victor.”

Everyone waited.

“It was placed under protection.”

“By who?” Victor asked.

Eleanor looked at the signature.

“My mother.”

A cold silence followed.

Bennett stepped closer.

“And?”

Eleanor looked at the final line.

“She named a successor.”

Victor stared.

“Who?”

Eleanor’s voice barely came out.

“She named…”

She looked at herself.

“Me.”

Before anyone could react, every phone in the cemetery received a message at the same time.

One sentence.

One warning.

YOU FOUND THE TRUTH. NOW TRY TO SURVIVE IT.

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

A photograph of Alexander Whitmore.

Standing inside Whitmore Estate.

May you like

Alive.

And smiling.
