Chapter 1 - The Storm Outside and WithinThe storm raging outside matched the icy destruction taking place inside my own hallway. Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the grand entryway of the home I had spent fifteen years building alongside Scott. But my husband wasn't looking at the rain, nor was he looking at me with any trace of the warmth we had shared when we started our life in a cramped, drafty garage.

“Get out, Diane.”
Scott didn’t even bother lowering his voice. His tone was flat, devoid of mercy, carrying the cold authority of a man who believed he had won.
I knelt on the wet, cold stone steps just inside the doorway, clutching eight-month-old Lily tight against my chest. Her body was burning with fever, her small fists shivering beneath her light pink blanket.
Behind Scott stood Vanessa. His mistress wore a fitted crimson dress, her polished heels resting comfortably on my marble floor. Her hair was immaculate, her coat dripping luxury, and her eyes sparkled with smirking victory.
“You’ve lived off Scott long enough,” Vanessa sneered, casually running her hand down Scott’s sleeve. “It’s time you realized where you belong, Diane. In the past.”
I nearly let out a bitter laugh. Lived off Scott? For fifteen years, I worked sixteen-hour days, balancing books, negotiating vendor contracts, and sacrificing every weekend to build Carter Enterprises from a failing startup into a multimillion-dollar empire. The house, the cars, the luxury—I had earned every brick.
Then, headlights swept across the wet driveway. A sleek black town car pulled up, and out stepped Evelyn, my mother-in-law.
Relief nearly washed over me. I had nursed Evelyn back to health after her knee surgery when Scott was too busy with "business trips." She had held my hand through forty-eight hours of agonizing labor when Lily was born. Surely she would put an end to this madness.
“Evelyn, please…” I begged, holding Lily closer.
Evelyn didn't answer. Her face was locked in an unreadable, hardened scowl. She marched up the stone steps, looking directly past my tear-filled eyes, and hurled a heavy, battered brown vintage suitcase straight at my feet. The worn brass corners clattered against the stone.
“Take your worthless bag and get out of my son’s house!” Evelyn roared, her hand outstretched as lightning cracked overhead.

Scott let out a cruel, triumphant laugh. Vanessa smirked, leaning into Scott's side.
Broken, drenched, and holding my sick child, I didn't fight back. I picked up the ugly suitcase, wrapped my coat over Lily to protect her from the freezing rain, and stepped out into the dark storm.
