Chapter 15 - The ReunionThat evening, after the courtroom cleared, Evelyn and I sat in a quiet, private booth at a warm Italian restaurant near the riverfront.

Eight-month-old Lily sat in a high chair beside us, happily playing with a soft plush bear that Evelyn had bought for her earlier that day. Her fever was long gone, her cheeks rosy and full of life.

Evelyn reached across the table, taking both of my hands into hers. Her hands, once so rigid and tense during the trial, were soft and warm.

"Diane," Evelyn said softly, her eyes glistening with gentle, heartfelt tears. "I am so, so sorry for the terrible pain I caused you on that stone patio. Throwing that bag... yelling those horrible words at you... it broke my heart to act like that toward the woman who treated me like a real mother."

I squeezed her hands tightly back. "Evelyn, you saved our lives. If you hadn't played that part, Scott would have searched your house and destroyed that key before I ever knew the truth. You sacrificed your relationship with your own son to protect Lily and me."

Evelyn looked over at little Lily, a beautiful, motherly smile spreading across her face.

"A real mother protects her family from monsters, Diane," Evelyn said softly. "Even if the monster happens to be her own child."

She pulled a velvet box from her purse and pushed it across the table toward me.

I opened it. Inside sat a heavy gold charm bracelet that had belonged to Scott’s grandmother—a priceless family heirloom that Scott had tried to claim years ago.

"This belonged to a woman of honor," Evelyn said, smiling warmly. "It belongs on your wrist, Diane. You earned it, and so much more."

I put the bracelet on, feeling the weight of the solid gold against my skin. The storm that had threatened to swallow Lily and me whole was finally over.
