Chapter 16 - The Return of the True CEOSix weeks after the jury returned their guilty verdicts, the glass-and-steel doors of Carter Enterprises opened to a very different morning.

The tension that had suffocated the twelfth floor for months was gone. The forensic accountants had finished their work, the court-appointed receivership was lifted, and the employees gathered in the main atrium, whispering nervously as they waited for the new leadership to arrive.

I stepped out of the elevator wearing a tailored navy blazer, carrying a sleek leather briefcase in one hand and holding Evelyn’s hand in the other. Behind us walked Victoria Sterling, holding the certified court order confirming my restoration as 51% majority owner and Chief Executive Officer.

The entire atrium erupted into quiet applause. Department heads, software engineers, and administrative staff—people I had worked alongside for fifteen years while Scott locked himself in his corner office—stood in lines to welcome us back.

I walked directly to the main podium set up in the atrium.

"Fifteen years ago," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the microphone, "this company was founded on a simple promise: integrity, hard work, and loyalty to the people who build it. Somewhere along the way, Scott Carter forgot that promise. He treated this business like his personal piggy bank, and he treated the people in this room like expendable tools."

I looked out at the familiar faces staring back at me.

"That era is officially over," I declared firmly. "We are renaming this firm Carter & Daughter Global. Every employee will receive a 10% retention bonus funded directly from the assets recovered from Scott's seized accounts. We are going to rebuild this company together—not with lies, but with truth."

A thunderous round of applause echoed through the glass tower. For the first time in my life, I wasn't standing in the shadows behind Scott. I was standing at the helm of my own empire.
