The house was empty. Scott’s luxury sports cars had been repossessed and sold at public auction. Vanessa’s designer clothes and expensive furniture had been removed by court marshals to settle outstanding legal judgments. The grand rooms that had once echoed with champagne laughter during Scott’s parties were dead silent.
I walked through the double front doors, holding eighteen-month-old Lily in my arms, with Evelyn walking beside me.
We walked past the marble entryway and out through the back glass patio doors, stepping down the stone stairs into the backyard.
Fifty yards behind the house sat the old, weather-beaten storage shed where Scott and Vanessa had planned to leave us destitute.
I didn't destroy it. Instead, I brought in a team of contractors who demolished the decaying structure and replaced it with a breathtaking glass greenhouse filled with blooming white orchids, fresh roses, and warm sunlight—Evelyn’s favorite flowers.
