Chapter 17 - The Grand Council Convenes

Sixty seconds was all Dante needed.
When he emerged into the dimly lit hallway of the Queens apartment building, his knuckles were bruised, and the tactical knife was tucked away clean. Catherine had been stabilized on a portable stretcher and was being carried down the fire escape by two elite paramedics, while Margaret, sporting a neat white bandage over her forehead, sat on a folding chair sipping water under the watchful eye of three armed guards.
"Julian Drake," Dante said to Marco, his tone as calm and lethal as a winter frost. "And Vanessa Bennett. They paid twelve former French Foreign Legion contractors to execute the hit. Drake is hosting the emergency consortium meeting at the Manhattan Port Authority headquarters in forty minutes to vote on stripping our maritime leases."
Elena stood near the stairwell, her face pale, a dark purple bruise blooming along her neck where the mercenary’s forearm had choked her. She looked at Dante, her eyes clear despite the lingering shock.
"Margaret told me what happened," Elena said quietly, her voice hoarse from the trauma.
Dante stopped in his tracks, his entire body going rigid. He looked at Margaret, then back at Elena, his expression guarded, waiting for the final executioner’s axe to fall.
"She told me why you went to Pier 42," Elena continued, stepping toward him. "She told me you went there to warn my father. To save him from Antonio."
Dante looked down at the scarred floorboards, unable to meet her gaze. "It doesn't change the outcome, Elena. I was reckless. I pulled a weapon. If I had been smarter, stronger... your father would have walked out of that city with you and your mother. You wouldn't have spent twenty years in poverty. Your mother’s heart wouldn't have failed."
"My father died because Antonio Moretti was a butcher," Elena said, her voice trembling with intense emotion. She reached out, her small, delicate hand gently touching the rough stubble along his jawline. Dante flinched slightly at the touch, as if he didn't believe he deserved it. "You were nineteen, Dante. You risked your life to defy your own father for a stranger. You spent twenty-one years carrying the guilt of a murder you didn't commit... and then you spent millions saving my mother’s life without ever asking for credit."
Tears welled in Dante’s eyes. "Elena... I thought when you threw that ring... I thought I had lost the only good thing that ever happened to this rotten life."
"You haven't lost me," she whispered, leaning forward until her forehead rested against his chest. "But we are finishing this today. Vanessa Bennett and Julian Drake tried to murder my mother and Margaret in this room. They tried to tear down everything you built to hurt me. Take me to the Port Authority, Dante."
Dante’s eyes widened with fierce surprise. "Elena, it's a war zone. The council—"
"I am the Queen of this family," Elena cut him off, her chin lifting with an undeniable, regal authority that stunned even Marco. "You put that crown on my head, Dante. Now let me stand beside you while you take their heads."
A slow, terrifying, triumphant smile spread across Dante’s face. The darkness that had haunted him for twenty-one years evaporated, replaced by an unstoppable, lethal clarity.
"Marco," Dante commanded, his voice ringing through the corridor. "Assemble the entire tactical convoy. Call the District Attorney’s office and inform them that the grand jury evidence regarding Julian Drake’s offshore maritime bribes will be delivered in person. We are going to the Port Authority."
Thirty minutes later, five black armored Cadillac Escalades roared through the Lincoln Tunnel under emergency police escorts authorized by Dante’s municipal security credentials.
Inside the executive boardroom on the fortieth floor of the Port Authority building, Julian Drake stood at the podium. Behind him sat the three elderly consortium directors, along with Vanessa Bennett, who sat in the VIP observer gallery, radiating smug satisfaction.
"The motion is on the floor," Drake announced, tapping his gavel. "Due to ongoing criminal liabilities and unvetted syndicate entanglements, the North Atlantic Consortium officially votes to terminate the Hudson docking charter held by Moretti Logistics LLC. All in favor—"
The heavy double doors of the boardroom were blown off their hinges with a thunderous crash that shattered the adjacent decorative glass partitions.
Through the drifting smoke walked Dante Moretti, clad in an immaculate black three-piece suit. And walking right beside him, her head held high, wearing a tailored cream blazer with the bruises on her neck exposed like badges of war, was Elena Moretti.

Behind them marched six armed federal marshals alongside the Chief Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Vanessa Bennett gasped, rising to her feet, her champagne glass slipping from her fingers and shattering on the polished hardwood floor. "How... how are you alive?"
