Chapter 5 - A Contract Signed in Shadows

By noon the following day, the tension inside the Moretti mansion had turned toxic.
Elena had spent the morning on the phone with her mother. Catherine had wept with relief, explaining that two private nurses and an ambulance had arrived to transport her to the premier cardiovascular wing in Manhattan. Elena had cried with her, but every ounce of gratitude in her heart was shadowed by the terror of what this favor would cost Dante.
Down in the east wing, Richard Bennett had arrived without an appointment.
Elena was refilling the tea service in the adjacent parlor when the raised voices from Dante's executive study broke through the double doors. Richard Bennett, a silver-haired patriarch whose political clout extended into the governor’s mansion, sounded unhinged.
"You embarrassed my daughter in front of the help, Moretti!" Richard barked. "We had an agreement. The press releases for the wedding date are supposed to go out on Friday!"
"The agreement was contingent on your daughter behaving like an asset, not a liability," Dante's icy tone sliced through the older man's fury. "Vanessa threw a scene. She harassed my staff. She forgot whose house she was sleeping in."
"Staff?" Richard laughed derisively. "You're jeopardizing a three-hundred-million-dollar maritime logistics monopoly over a girl who scrubs baseboards? Dante, wake up! You run an underworld syndicate trying to go legitimate. Without the Bennett name on the board of directors, the SEC will tear your holdings apart within six months!"
"Let them try," Dante replied, unbothered. "The SEC answers to paper trails. I don't leave trails, Richard. You do."
A heavy silence followed. Elena peeked through the crack of the pantry door. Through the library's glass partition, she saw Dante standing behind his massive black oak desk, his arms crossed over a crisp charcoal vest. Richard Bennett stood opposite him, his face flushed purple with suppressed rage.
"Don't push me, boy," Richard whispered, stepping closer to the desk. "You think you're invincible because you have men with guns. But power in this country isn't held by soldiers in the street. It's held in backrooms by men who sign warrants. If Vanessa is cast aside, I won't just pull my investments. I will burn every dock warehouse you own to the waterline."
Dante didn't even blink. He leaned forward, resting both hands on the desk, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Richard. If a single match is struck near my property, I won't call the police. I will release the offshore accounting logs from your Bahamas shell corporation to the Southern District of New York. By midnight, your assets will be frozen, your daughter's trust fund will be seized, and you will spend the rest of your natural life in a federal penitentiary in upstate New York. Now take your coat, leave my house, and teach your daughter some manners before I revoke her invitation to my dinner table."
Richard Bennett stared at Dante as if seeing a demon. He clutched his leather briefcase, turned sharply on his heel, and stormed out of the study.

As Richard passed the parlor where Elena stood with the silver tea service, his venomous eyes caught hers. A terrifying, predatory smile formed on the politician’s lips. He didn't say a word, but the message was unmistakable: If I cannot destroy Dante, I will destroy the thing he cares about.
Elena's hands trembled as she set down the porcelain cups. The game was no longer about high-society gossip or maid uniforms. It had become a lethal contest of survival, and she was the pawn placed directly in the line of fire.
