Chapter 7 - A Frame in the Dark

"You planted that," Elena said, her voice dropping from panic into icy clarity as the guard twisted her wrist behind her back. "You had someone slip it into my apron while I was in the laundry room."

Vanessa walked over, her silk robe rustling, and tapped the yellow diamond pendant with her long fingernail. "Of course I did, darling. Did you really think you could win? A girl whose mother cleans offices, thinking she could steal the king of New York from me?"

"Dante will know the truth," Elena said through gritted teeth, refusing to show tears. "He knows what kind of person you are."

"Dante won't care about the truth," Vanessa laughed softly, leaning in until Elena could smell the bitter floral perfume on her neck. "Dante is a businessman. When the Bennett family leaks to the New York Post that Dante Moretti’s live-in maid is an unrepentant felon caught red-handed with family heirlooms, he will have to cut ties with you to protect his public image. And as for your mother? The moment you are booked into Rikers Island, the private hospital wing will evict her. She won't last a week without those machines."

The sheer malice of the plan knocked the wind out of Elena. This wasn't just jealousy; it was calculated slaughter.

Downstairs, the distant sound of police sirens began to echo across the long driveway, cutting through the autumn woods.

"Take her down to the foyer," Vanessa commanded the guards. "Let every servant in this house watch her leave in handcuffs."

The two guards dragged Elena down the grand spiral staircase. Margaret Whitmore stood at the base of the stairs, clutching her phone to her ear, tears of rage in her eyes.

"Margaret, call him!" Elena called out, her voice cracking.

"I tried, Elena! His phone is going straight to voicemail! They're in an underground meeting room!" Margaret cried out, trying to block the Bennett guards. "You men have no authority here! This is Moretti property!"

"Back off, old woman, before we cite you for obstruction," one of the guards shoved Margaret aside carelessly.

The heavy mahogany front doors swung open. Two uniformed police officers stepped inside, accompanied by a smug-looking detective in a trench coat.

"We received a call regarding grand larceny," the detective said, flashing a badge.

"Here she is, Detective," Vanessa said dramatically, descending the stairs like an actress taking the stage. "Elena Carter. Caught with my grandmother’s diamond in her pocket. The jewelry is right here."

The detective looked at Elena, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "Turn around, Miss Carter. Hands behind your back."

Elena felt her spirit breaking. The cold steel touched her wrists. The nightmare from the Grand Central Hotel was repeating itself, but this time, the stakes weren't just her livelihood—it was her mother's life.

"Wait," Elena pleaded, looking the detective in the eyes. "Check the hallway security cameras! Look at the footage from thirty minutes ago! You'll see who entered my quarters!"

"We don't need footage when the stolen property is recovered on the suspect's person," the detective said coldly.

The first cuff clicked shut over her right wrist.

Then, the sudden, deafening roar of three modified V8 engines shattered the afternoon calm outside the estate.

Tires screeched violently across the gravel courtyard. The heavy sound of car doors slamming echoed like gunshots.

Before the detective could secure the second handcuff, the front doors were kicked wide open, slamming against the marble walls with a force that shook the crystal sconces.
