Chapter 22 - Whispers in the Glass

The high-speed pursuit outside the Plaza Hotel ended in under five minutes. While New York police cruisers swarmed Fifth Avenue with wailing sirens, Dante’s private motorcade of armored black Escalades was already rocketing north toward the Hudson Valley estate under maximum tactical escort.

Inside the rear passenger cabin of the lead vehicle, Elena sat trembling, not out of fear for herself, but from the horrifying realization of how close she had come to never seeing her children again. The lavender-stained linen napkin lay inside a sealed evidence bag on the leather console between them.

Dante was on his encrypted satellite phone, his voice vibrating with absolute, merciless fury. "Lock down the estate grounds immediately. Deploy double perimeter patrols along the river fence. If an unauthorized vehicle approaches within a mile of our gate, disable it on sight."

"Dante," Elena choked out, reaching for his free hand. Her fingers were ice-cold.

Dante hung up the call instantly. He pulled her onto his lap, his powerful arms wrapping around her with a fierce, trembling desperation that belied his ruthless reputation. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling her floral scent, feeling the rapid pulse beneath her soft skin.

"I almost lost you," Dante whispered, his voice cracking with raw agony. "Right in front of three hundred people. Under my watch."

"You caught it," she said, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders and holding him tight. "You smelled it, Dante. You saved my life."

"It shouldn't have been in your hand in the first place!" he snarled against her throat, his knuckles bruising white as his fists clenched against her velvet dress. "I dismantled the Bennetts. I bankrupted the old consortium. I spent three years scrubbing my hands clean so you and our children could walk in the sunlight, and yet these vermin still think they can target you!"

"Who was that server?" Elena asked, leaning back so she could look directly into his storm-grey eyes. "He was barely twenty years old. He looked terrified."

Dante’s eyes narrowed into terrifying slits. "Marco is interrogating him at the south precinct warehouse right now. The boy was an indebted gambler whose sister’s medical care was being held hostage by an offshore syndicate. He was promised two million dollars in a Dubai account if he slipped the compound into your glass."

"And Charles Vance?"

"Charles didn't act alone," Dante replied coldly. "Charles doesn't have the stomach or the tactical network to acquire military-grade synthetic cyanide. Someone financed him. Someone with access to high-level European prison contraband and encrypted offshore accounts."

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. "Vanessa?"

"Vanessa is in Danbury Federal Correctional Institution," Dante said. "Her mail is monitored, her phone calls are recorded, and she is locked in solitary confinement twenty-three hours a day. She couldn't order a cup of coffee without the warden knowing."

"Then who, Dante? Who hates us this much?"

Before Dante could answer, his phone buzzed on the leather seat. It was a secure video transmission from Marco. Dante tapped the speakerphone.

"Speak," Dante ordered.

"Boss," Marco’s rough voice came through the speaker, accompanied by the muffled, frantic sobs of the captured server in the background. "The kid gave up the drop point. He didn't receive the vial from Charles Vance. He got it from an intermediary representing a private maritime security contractor based in Marseilles."

Dante went dead silent. "The French syndicate? Pierre De La Cruz?"

"De La Cruz passed away two years ago in a Monaco hospice," Marco clarified, his tone dropping an octave into grave apprehension. "His private empire, including his remaining private fleet and unseized assets, was quietly inherited by his silent partner through a Swiss marriage deed six months ago."

Elena leaned closer to the phone. "Who is the silent partner, Marco?"

A heavy pause hung over the line, punctuated only by the hum of the Escalade's engine tearing through the darkness.

"Richard Bennett's former Swiss trustee," Marco replied grimly. "And according to the prison manifest we just breached... Vanessa Bennett was granted an emergency medical furlough to a private clinical facility in White Plains forty-eight hours ago. She walked out the back gate with a counterfeit court order. She’s vanished, Boss."

Elena felt the oxygen leave the vehicle. Vanessa was out. The woman who had sworn to watch Elena die in the gutter was loose on the streets of New York, backed by European mercenaries and millions in unrecovered black-market funds.

Dante didn't raise his voice. He didn't curse. The feral mob boss inside him awakened, stripping away every civilized pretense he had cultivated.

"Turn the cars around," Dante commanded his lead driver calmly.

May you like

"Boss?" the driver hesitated.

"Take Mrs. Moretti to the estate under heavy guard," Dante whispered, his voice dripping with venomous finality. "Then assemble every enforcer in this city. If Vanessa Bennett is breathing the air in New York, I will tear this town down brick by bloody brick until I find her."
