Chapter 13 - A New Dawn in Room 104When the morning sun broke over the cliffs of Naples, the power structure of the city's underworld had shifted permanently. By 8:00 a.m., the remaining captains of the Moretti syndicate had surrendered their shipping lanes, warehouses, and turf to Paul Ferrell without firing a single shot.

The war was over before the city even woke up.

At 9:00 a.m., Tessa walked down the bright, carpeted hallway of the East Wing. The air felt lighter, the oppressive tension that had hung over the estate for days completely evaporated. Armed guards still patrolled the perimeter, but their posture was relaxed, bowing respectfully as Tessa passed.

She pushed open the door to Room 104.

Beatrice sat in her armchair by the sunlit window, wearing a soft lavender cardigan. On the table beside her rested a silver tray with a fresh bowl of hot oatmeal, sliced strawberries, and a small glass of orange juice.

Beside the armchair sat Damian.

He had changed out of his dark coat into a simple black cashmere sweater. He sat on the low wooden stool, holding a small silver spoon, patiently feeding his mother bite by bite.

Tessa stopped near the doorway, her breath catching in her throat.

Beatrice chewed slowly, then looked up as the door clicked shut. A sudden, radiant spark of recognition lit her dark, clouded eyes.

"Tessa!" Beatrice called out, her voice stronger and clearer than it had been in weeks. "Come here! Tell my son his oatmeal is better than the hospital cardboard, but he still burns the toast!"

Damian looked up, a faint, rare smile touching his lips. The terrifying mob chief who had dismantled an empire four hours ago was completely gone, replaced by a son looking at his mother with quiet, profound relief.

Tessa walked forward, her heart swelling with an emotion so powerful it brought warm tears to her eyes. "Morning, Beatrice. Morning, Damian."

"She woke up at eight," Damian said softly, standing up and stepping aside so Tessa could sit beside the chair. "She asked for you first. Then she asked for me."

Beatrice reached out, her frail, warm fingers wrapping tightly around Tessa’s hand on one side, and taking Damian's hand on the other.

"My boys," Beatrice rasped happily, her mind floating in a peaceful, clear space. "You brought my boy back to me, sweet girl."

Tessa looked up at Damian. He was staring down at her, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unvarnished devotion that needed no words.
