Chapter 18 - The Ring in the LibraryLate one evening, rain returned to the cliffs of Naples, drumming a steady, comforting rhythm against the floor-to-ceiling glass of the main library.

A warm peat fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace. Tessa sat on the velvet sofa, a thick art history book open across her lap, her feet tucked up beneath her cashmere skirt.

Damian walked in from his study, setting down two glasses of deep red wine on the mahogany table. He walked over to the fire, standing with one arm resting on the mantelpiece, watching her in the amber light.

"You're quiet tonight," Tessa said softly, closing her book and looking up at him.

"I was thinking about the night you stood in my study four months ago," Damian admitted, his voice rough and low. "You were wearing a worn cardigan, holding a cleaning rag, and refusing to back down when I asked why you were kind to my mother."

Tessa smiled faintly, setting her glass aside. "I was terrified of you."

"No, you weren't," Damian murmured, walking over to sit beside her on the sofa. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box. "You looked right through me."

Tessa’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes moved from his face to the velvet box in his hand.

Damian opened it quietly.

Inside sat an exquisite vintage ring—a brilliant, ethically sourced cushion-cut diamond set in platinum, surrounded by delicate sapphires that mirrored the color of the Tyrrhenian Sea outside their window.

"This belonged to my grandmother," Damian said gently, taking her soft hand into his broad, warm palm. "My mother hid it during the wars so the rival families wouldn't take it. She told me thirty years ago that I should only give it to a woman who possessed a heart strong enough to hold this house together."

Tessa looked into his dark eyes, tears shining like diamonds in her own. "Damian..."

"I don't offer you a quiet life, Tessa," Damian whispered, his voice trembling with a rare, raw vulnerability. "I offer you my protection, my estate, and every beat of my heart for as long as I breathe. Will you marry me?"

Tessa didn't hesitate for a single second. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face against his collarbone, sobbing with pure, overwhelming joy.

"Yes," she whispered fiercely into his neck. "Yes, Damian. Yes."

Damian wrapped his strong arms around her, pulling her tightly against his chest, kissing her hair as the rain washed over the glass behind them.
