Chapter 10 – The Charity Gala

Arthur didn't hesitate.

"Cancel the reservation," he ordered over the phone.

The head of corporate security answered immediately.

"We tried, sir."

Arthur frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"It wasn't booked through our reservation system."

The room fell silent.

"It was added directly to the hotel's executive guest list."

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Only three people have that level of access."

"Exactly."

Emily looked at him.

"So someone inside your company is still helping them."

Arthur nodded.

"Which means Richard Collins wasn't acting alone."

He ended the call and turned to Emily.

"You're not going to that gala."

Emily opened her mouth to protest but stopped.

She understood his concern.

Whoever had arranged the reservation wanted her there for a reason.

And after everything that had happened, it was almost certainly a trap.

Later that afternoon, Arthur gathered his most trusted advisors inside the executive conference room.

Detective Henry Lawson spread blueprints of the Grand Bennett Ballroom across the table.

"This is tomorrow night's charity gala."

He pointed toward the main entrance.

"More than five hundred guests are expected."

Arthur crossed his arms.

"Our enemy chose that event carefully."

Henry nodded.

"There will be politicians, executives, reporters, and donors."

"In a crowd that size, someone could disappear without being noticed."

Margaret quietly studied the floor plan.

"What if that's exactly what they want us to think?"

Everyone looked at her.

"They expect us to keep Emily away."

Arthur slowly nodded.

"And if we don't..."

Henry finished the thought.

"...they'll expose themselves."

Silence filled the room.

Emily looked around the table.

"You want me to go."

Arthur met her eyes.

"Only if we can protect you."

"I don't like using you as bait."

Emily thought for several seconds.

"My grandmother always believed the truth was worth fighting for."

She smiled sadly.

"If hiding hasn't protected anyone for twenty-five years..."

"...maybe it's time to stop hiding."

Arthur admired her courage.

He also feared it.

By evening, a plan had been finalized.

Only a handful of people knew Emily would attend the gala.

She would arrive through a private entrance.

Two undercover security teams would blend into the crowd.

Former federal agents would remain within sight at all times.

Local police would monitor the perimeter without revealing their presence.

Arthur insisted on one final precaution.

Emily would never be left alone.

The following night, the Bennett Grand Ballroom glittered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers.

Guests in elegant gowns and tuxedos filled the room.

A string quartet played softly near the stage.

Television crews interviewed donors along the red carpet.

Everything appeared perfect.

No one suspected a hidden war was unfolding beneath the glamour.

Emily stepped from a private elevator wearing a simple navy evening gown Margaret had personally chosen.

"You look beautiful," Margaret said warmly.

Emily smiled nervously.

"I feel out of place."

Margaret shook her head.

"Kindness belongs everywhere."

Arthur approached wearing a black tuxedo.

"You ready?"

Emily nodded.

"As ready as I'll ever be."

He offered his arm.

"Then let's go."

Together, they entered the ballroom.

Conversation briefly paused as guests noticed Arthur escorting one of the hotel's housekeepers.

Whispers immediately spread.

"Isn't that the maid from the lobby?"

"Why is she here?"

"Who's she with?"

Arthur ignored every whisper.

He proudly walked beside Emily as though she belonged there.

Because, in his eyes, she did.

Across the ballroom, a distinguished gray-haired gentleman watched quietly from a corner table.

His tailored tuxedo fit perfectly.

A silver cane rested beside his chair.

To everyone else, he appeared to be another wealthy philanthropist.

But when Emily entered the room...

His smile disappeared.

"So," he murmured.

"They finally brought her."

A younger man leaned toward him.

"What are your instructions?"

The older man never looked away from Emily.

"Wait."

"For what?"

"I want to see whether Samuel Brooks talked."

The younger man nodded.

"And if he did?"

The older man's eyes became cold.

"Then tonight..."

"...everyone connected to that secret disappears."

Arthur greeted donors while quietly scanning the room.

His security earpiece remained hidden beneath his collar.

"Team One?"

"Positioned."

"Team Two?"

"In place."

"Any movement?"

"Negative."

Everything seemed calm.

Almost too calm.

Emily tried to relax.

Margaret introduced her to several longtime friends, all of whom treated her with surprising kindness.

For a brief moment, Emily almost forgot why they were there.

Then she noticed something.

Near the ballroom entrance stood an enormous framed portrait of William Bennett, Arthur's late father.

Guests occasionally stopped to admire it.

As Emily looked closer...

She froze.

Arthur immediately noticed.

"What is it?"

Emily slowly pointed toward the portrait.

"That necklace."

Arthur examined the painting.

His father wore a gold signet ring.

His mother wore pearl earrings.

Nothing unusual.

"What necklace?"

Emily stepped closer.

"The woman beside your father."

Arthur looked again.

Standing beside William Bennett in the portrait was a young woman smiling proudly.

Around her neck hung a delicate silver locket.

The very same locket Samuel Brooks had carried.

Emily's breathing became shallow.

"I've seen that before."

Margaret walked over.

Her face turned pale.

"Oh, my goodness..."

Arthur looked at his mother.

"Who is she?"

Margaret stared at the portrait for several long seconds.

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"That's Elizabeth Whitmore."

"The wife of Charles Whitmore."

Emily couldn't take her eyes off the locket.

Inside it had been engraved:

For our daughter... Emily Grace Bennett.

Arthur suddenly understood.

"If Elizabeth was wearing that locket..."

He stopped speaking.

The implications were staggering.

Before anyone could say another word, the master of ceremonies stepped onto the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

The ballroom grew quiet.

"It is my great honor to introduce tonight's keynote speaker..."

Arthur's security earpiece suddenly crackled.

A panicked voice shouted,

"Sir!"

Arthur pressed the receiver.

"What happened?"

"We've got a problem."

"What kind of problem?"

"The man listed as tonight's keynote speaker..."

The officer's voice trembled.

"...checked into the hotel using a false identity."

Arthur looked toward the stage.

The announcer smiled brightly.

"Please welcome..."

The ballroom doors slowly opened.

Every guest turned to look.

Arthur's heart nearly stopped.

Walking confidently into the spotlight was the very man everyone believed had died twenty years earlier.

Charles Whitmore.

And as he smiled at the applauding crowd, his eyes locked directly onto Emily.

May you like

It was the smile of a man who had finally found what he had been searching for.

For twenty-five years.
