Chapter 13 – The House of Secrets

The old Bennett estate sat on a hill overlooking the city, surrounded by towering trees and years of forgotten memories.

For decades, the mansion had remained mostly untouched.

After Daniel Bennett's death, Arthur had avoided the property.

Too many memories lived inside those walls.

Too many unanswered questions.

Now, twenty-five years later, the place had become the center of a mystery that could destroy everything the Bennett family had built.

Police vehicles lined the long driveway as Arthur, Margaret, Emily, and Henry arrived.

Security surrounded them immediately.

"Mr. Bennett, we need you to stay with the officers."

Arthur ignored the instruction.

"Where is Richard Collins?"

The detective looked uncomfortable.

"Inside."

"Alive?"

A pause.

"Yes."

Emily felt a strange mixture of anger and relief.

After everything Richard had done, she still wanted answers.

Not revenge.

Answers.

The front doors of the mansion opened slowly.

The smell of old wood and dust filled the entrance hall.

Everything looked exactly as Arthur remembered.

The grand staircase.

The family portraits.

The antique furniture.

But something was different.

The silence.

It felt like the house had been waiting.

Waiting for the truth to return.

A police officer guided them toward the library.

When Arthur entered, he stopped.

Richard Collins sat in an old leather chair near the fireplace.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

Nothing like the confident executive who had disappeared days earlier.

"Arthur."

Arthur's expression remained cold.

"You have a lot to explain."

Richard lowered his eyes.

"I know."

Emily stepped forward.

"Why did you investigate me?"

Richard looked at her.

His face changed.

Regret.

Guilt.

Pain.

"Because I needed to know if you were safe."

Emily frowned.

"Safe from who?"

Richard didn't answer.

Arthur stepped closer.

"You ran because Charles Whitmore came back."

Richard nodded.

"And because I knew he would come for her."

He looked at Emily.

"Just like he came for your parents."

The room became silent.

Arthur clenched his jaw.

"You helped him."

Richard closed his eyes.

"Yes."

The admission shocked everyone.

Emily stared at him.

"Why?"

Richard looked toward the fireplace.

"Because I was a coward."

Twenty-five years earlier.

Richard Collins had been a young executive working for Bennett Foundation.

He had admired William Bennett.

He had admired Daniel.

They believed they were building something meaningful.

Then Charles Whitmore discovered the foundation's weaknesses.

He found ways to move money through fake charities and hidden accounts.

At first, Richard didn't know.

When he discovered the truth, he confronted Charles.

But Charles was prepared.

"He showed me evidence that could destroy the entire Bennett family," Richard explained.

"Not just the company."

"Your father's reputation."

"Your brother's future."

Arthur frowned.

"What evidence?"

Richard looked at him.

"Fake records."

"Documents made to look like William was involved."

Emily whispered:

"He framed him."

Richard nodded.

"Charles was brilliant."

"He knew no one would believe the truth if he controlled the evidence."

"So you helped him?"

Richard looked ashamed.

"I thought I was protecting the family."

Arthur's voice turned bitter.

"You were protecting yourself."

Richard didn't deny it.

"I was afraid."

Emily stepped closer.

"Tell me about my parents."

Richard looked at her.

"Your father discovered everything."

"He knew Charles was stealing money."

"He knew someone inside the company was helping him."

"Your mother wanted to go to the police."

Emily held her breath.

"What happened?"

Richard's voice became quieter.

"They were going to leave with you."

"Caroline Parker helped them."

Arthur looked surprised.

"My father knew Caroline?"

Richard nodded.

"She was the only person Daniel trusted completely."

Emily touched her necklace.

"My grandmother saved me."

"Yes."

Richard looked at her.

"She saved your life."

"That night, Daniel and Elizabeth were supposed to meet Caroline at the lake house."

"But someone followed them."

Arthur stared.

"Charles."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

Everyone froze.

"Then who?"

Richard looked toward the old family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

"Your grandfather's private security chief."

Arthur frowned.

"My grandfather's security chief?"

"Yes."

"He worked for Charles."

The room went quiet.

Richard continued.

"Charles didn't get his hands dirty."

"He paid others to do it."

Henry received a message from one of the officers.

He checked his phone.

Then his expression changed.

"Arthur."

"What?"

"We searched the east wing."

"And?"

"We found something hidden behind a wall."

Everyone followed the officers down the hallway.

Behind an old wooden panel was a small hidden room.

Inside were boxes filled with documents.

Photographs.

Recordings.

And dozens of files.

Henry opened the first folder.

His eyes widened.

"These are original financial records."

Arthur looked closer.

"The real ones."

Richard nodded.

"Charles thought he destroyed everything."

Emily looked around the hidden room.

"He kept all of this?"

Richard answered quietly.

"No."

A chill ran through the room.

"He didn't."

"Someone else did."

Arthur looked at him.

"Who?"

Richard hesitated.

Then he pointed toward the final box.

Inside was a handwritten journal.

The cover had a name written in faded ink.

William Bennett.

Arthur slowly opened it.

The first page contained a sentence that changed everything.

If anything happens to Daniel, Richard, or Caroline, the person responsible is someone within my own family.

Arthur stopped breathing.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Emily looked at the page.

"Your father knew."

Arthur turned another page.

More handwriting.

More secrets.

Then he found the final entry.

The last thing William Bennett ever wrote.

I was wrong about the person I trusted most.

Below the sentence was a name.

Arthur stared at it.

His face went pale.

"No..."

Emily stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Arthur slowly turned the journal around.

Everyone saw the name.

Margaret Bennett.

The room fell silent.

The woman who had protected Emily.

The woman who had welcomed her.

May you like

The woman everyone trusted.

Had her name been written as the final secret in William Bennett's journal.
