Chapter 9 – Darkness in the Hallway

The intensive care unit was plunged into complete darkness.

For a split second, the only sound was the shrill wail of emergency alarms.

Then the backup generators failed to start.

Arthur's instincts took over.

"Everyone stay behind me," he ordered.

He stepped in front of Emily and Margaret, shielding them from the doorway.

Outside, voices echoed through the corridor.

"Security!"

"This way!"

"I saw someone run toward the east stairwell!"

A nurse hurried into the room with a flashlight.

"The emergency power is out. Please don't leave the room."

Arthur looked toward the window. The city outside still glowed with lights.

Only the hospital was dark.

"Someone cut the power," he said.

The nurse's expression turned pale.

"You think this was intentional?"

"I do."

Just then, Samuel Brooks struggled to lift his hand.

"Arthur..."

Arthur leaned close.

"I'm here."

"They're not after me anymore."

His voice was barely audible.

"They're after... her."

His eyes shifted toward Emily.

Arthur nodded once.

"They won't get near her."

Before Samuel could reply, the emergency generators finally roared to life.

The lights flickered once...

Twice...

Then the room was flooded with light again.

The heart monitor resumed its steady rhythm.

Everyone exhaled in relief.

But the relief lasted only seconds.

One of Arthur's security officers burst into the room.

"Sir!"

Arthur turned.

"What happened?"

"We found a guard unconscious near the stairwell."

"And?"

"The security cameras on this floor were disabled."

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"Again."

The officer nodded.

"Whoever did this knew exactly where every blind spot was."

Henry Lawson arrived moments later, carrying a small plastic evidence bag.

"We recovered this."

Inside lay a black electronic device no larger than a deck of cards.

"What is it?" Emily asked.

Henry examined it.

"A signal jammer."

"It temporarily blocked communication between the emergency generators and the hospital's backup system."

Arthur frowned.

"So the outage wasn't an accident."

"No."

Henry looked grim.

"It was planned."

Across town, a black SUV pulled into an underground parking garage.

The driver remained silent as the passenger removed a pair of gloves.

His face was hidden beneath a baseball cap.

He tossed a hospital visitor badge onto the passenger seat.

"So?" the driver asked.

The man sighed.

"We were too late."

"Did Brooks talk?"

"I don't know."

The driver gripped the steering wheel.

"Our employer won't be pleased."

The passenger stared out the window.

"Then we'd better make sure Brooks never gets another chance."

Back at the hospital, police investigators began examining every hallway.

Arthur requested additional protection for Emily.

"I don't need bodyguards," she protested.

"You do now."

Emily shook her head.

"I don't want everyone worrying about me."

Arthur smiled faintly.

"This isn't a request."

Margaret added gently, "Please humor us."

Emily reluctantly agreed.

"I'll try."

Arthur assigned two trusted former federal agents to remain with her at all times.

Neither of them wore uniforms.

Both blended easily into the background.

Emily found that strangely comforting.

Later that evening, Samuel awoke again.

The doctor allowed only Arthur and Emily into the room.

Samuel looked noticeably weaker.

"I don't have much time."

Arthur pulled a chair closer.

"Then tell us everything."

Samuel nodded.

"Twenty-five years ago..."

He paused to catch his breath.

"William Bennett discovered someone inside his charitable foundation had been stealing millions intended for children's hospitals."

Arthur frowned.

"My father suspected someone?"

"Yes."

"He trusted only three people."

"Caroline Parker."

"Myself."

"And Richard Collins."

Emily looked confused.

"Richard was trusted?"

Samuel closed his eyes.

"He was loyal..."

"...at first."

Arthur leaned forward.

"What changed?"

Samuel's expression filled with regret.

"Greed."

"He found out who was behind the theft."

"And instead of exposing them..."

"He accepted their money."

Arthur's face hardened.

"So Richard became part of it."

Samuel nodded.

"But he wasn't the mastermind."

Emily spoke softly.

"Who was?"

Samuel looked directly at Arthur.

"The one person your father never suspected."

Arthur waited.

Samuel whispered a single name.

"Charles Whitmore."

Arthur felt the blood drain from his face.

"Impossible."

Emily looked between them.

"You know him?"

Arthur nodded slowly.

"He was my father's closest friend."

Margaret entered the room just in time to hear the name.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

"No..."

Samuel nodded sadly.

"He used the Bennett Foundation to hide decades of financial crimes."

Arthur struggled to process it.

"Charles died twenty years ago."

Samuel looked at him carefully.

"Did he?"

Arthur frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Samuel pointed weakly toward the hospital television mounted on the wall.

"Turn it on."

Arthur grabbed the remote.

A national business news channel appeared.

The anchor was reporting on a charity gala scheduled for the following evening.

Emily froze.

Projected on the screen behind the anchor was a promotional photograph.

Standing beside several donors...

Smiling confidently...

Was a distinguished older businessman.

Samuel pointed toward the television.

"There."

Arthur stared in disbelief.

"That's..."

Margaret whispered the name before Arthur could.

"Charles Whitmore."

Emily frowned.

"But you said he died."

Arthur slowly lowered the remote.

"He was declared dead after a boating accident."

Samuel nodded.

"There was never a body."

Silence filled the room.

Arthur realized something that made his stomach turn.

"If Charles Whitmore is alive..."

He looked at Samuel.

"...then everything we've believed for twenty-five years has been a lie."

Before Samuel could answer, Arthur's phone vibrated.

It was the head of corporate security.

Arthur answered immediately.

"Yes?"

The man's voice was urgent.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"We just identified who reserved the presidential suite at tomorrow night's charity gala."

Arthur's expression darkened.

"Who?"

There was a brief pause.

Then came the answer.

"Emily Parker."

Emily's eyes widened.

"I never reserved anything."

Arthur already knew she hadn't.

Someone else had.

Someone wanted Emily at the gala.

May you like

And for the first time, Arthur feared it wasn't to reveal the truth—

It was to finish what had started twenty-five years earlier.
