Chapter 3 – The Anonymous Benefactor

Emily sat perfectly still, her fingers wrapped around the warm teacup.

Two million dollars.

Arthur's words echoed in her mind.

Fortunately, neither Arthur nor Margaret seemed to notice the brief change in her expression. They were too focused on discussing the investigation.

"The finance department verified every transfer," Arthur explained. "The donations were made through a private charitable foundation. The donor insisted on remaining anonymous."

Margaret smiled thoughtfully.

"Whoever it is has a generous heart."

Arthur nodded.

"The money has paid for cancer treatments, emergency surgeries, rent for employees who lost their homes, and scholarships for their children."

Emily looked down at the table.

"That's wonderful."

Arthur studied her for a moment.

"You seem unusually interested."

Emily forced a small smile.

"I've seen coworkers receive help from the fund. It changed their lives."

That much was true.

Three years earlier, one of the hotel's housekeepers had been diagnosed with leukemia. Another employee had nearly lost his home after his wife was injured in a car accident. A dishwasher's young daughter had needed emergency heart surgery.

Each time, the fund had quietly covered the expenses.

No one had ever learned where the money came from.

Arthur leaned back in his chair.

"I've tried for years to identify the donor."

"And?"

"They've covered every trail."

Margaret chuckled.

"Perhaps they simply want kindness to remain about kindness."

Arthur smiled.

"Perhaps."

The conversation shifted as a server arrived with fresh pastries.

Margaret encouraged Emily to eat.

"You've probably been working since early this morning."

Emily laughed softly.

"Five-thirty."

"You must be exhausted."

"I enjoy my job."

Arthur raised an eyebrow.

"Most people don't say that."

Emily shrugged.

"My grandmother used to tell me that no honest job is ever beneath you."

Margaret's eyes brightened.

"She sounds like a wise woman."

"She was."

A shadow crossed Emily's face.

"She passed away four years ago."

"I'm sorry."

Emily nodded.

"So am I."

Before anyone could continue, Arthur's executive hurried into the lounge once again.

"Mr. Bennett."

Arthur stood immediately.

"What now?"

"We've completed the background investigation on Vanessa Holloway."

Arthur accepted the tablet.

"What did you find?"

The executive hesitated.

"She isn't connected to the Bennett family."

"I expected that."

"But..."

Arthur looked up.

"She has been working with someone."

His expression sharpened.

"Who?"

"We're still confirming the identity."

The executive lowered his voice.

"But several hotel managers reported seeing her meeting privately with someone who appeared to have access to internal company information."

Arthur frowned.

"An employee?"

"We believe so."

Silence settled over the room.

Someone inside Bennett Hospitality had been feeding Vanessa information.

Margaret sighed.

"That's disappointing."

Arthur's jaw tightened.

"It means today's incident may be larger than we thought."

Emily listened quietly.

She had worked at the hotel long enough to know how much Arthur valued his employees.

The possibility of betrayal clearly hurt him.

"I'll handle it," Arthur said.

The executive nodded.

"We've already begun reviewing personnel records."

As they walked away to discuss the investigation privately, Margaret remained seated with Emily.

"You seem thoughtful."

Emily smiled faintly.

"I was just thinking about trust."

Margaret nodded.

"It takes years to build."

"And only seconds to lose."

Emily looked toward the lobby.

"I hope whoever betrayed your family is found."

Margaret followed her gaze.

"So do I."

Later that afternoon, Emily returned to housekeeping.

Her best friend, Sofia Martinez, immediately rushed over.

"There you are!"

Emily laughed.

"I've only been gone an hour."

"The entire hotel is talking about you."

"I wish they weren't."

Sofia grinned.

"You stopped a woman from slapping the owner's mother."

"I wasn't trying to become famous."

"You already are."

Emily sighed dramatically.

"I'd rather clean twenty suites than answer everyone's questions."

Sofia laughed.

"Too late."

Just then, the housekeeping supervisor approached.

"Emily?"

"Yes?"

"The president's office called."

Emily blinked.

"My office?"

"They're requesting you tomorrow morning."

Emily's stomach tightened.

"Am I in trouble?"

The supervisor smiled.

"I seriously doubt it."

That evening, after finishing her shift, Emily left through the employee entrance.

She preferred walking home.

The quiet evening air helped her think.

As she crossed a nearby park, she noticed an elderly homeless veteran struggling to lift two heavy grocery bags.

Without hesitation, she walked over.

"May I help?"

The man smiled gratefully.

"Thank you."

She carried the bags to a nearby bench.

"You didn't have to do that."

Emily smiled.

"My grandmother would've expected me to."

The man laughed.

"She must've been an amazing woman."

"She was."

After making sure he had everything he needed, Emily continued toward her apartment.

She never noticed the black SUV parked across the street.

Inside, Arthur Bennett sat quietly in the back seat.

He had witnessed the entire exchange.

His driver glanced in the rearview mirror.

"Should I follow her, sir?"

Arthur shook his head.

"No."

"What are you thinking?"

Arthur watched Emily disappear into the distance.

"Most people are kind when someone important is watching."

He paused.

"But she had no idea anyone was looking."

The driver nodded.

"That's different."

Arthur smiled slightly.

"It tells you who a person really is."

He leaned back in his seat.

"Tomorrow, I intend to learn much more about Emily Parker."

May you like

Neither Arthur nor Emily realized they were both about to uncover a truth that had been buried for more than twenty-five years—a truth linking her family to the Bennett family in a way neither of them could have imagined.

And once that secret surfaced, none of their lives would ever be the same.
