Chapter 15: The New Foundation

One year later.

The sun rose over Blackwood Valley, burning away the morning mist that lingered over the hills. The charred ruins of the old mansion were gone, cleared away to make room for a simple timber-frame building—a community historic trust and land restoration project funded by the recovered family assets.

Julian stood near the edge of the property, his sleeves rolled up, his hands covered in dark, rich soil as he planted young oak saplings along the perimeter fence.

His face was weathered by the sun, his tailored suits replaced by sturdy work clothes. He no longer appeared on the covers of financial magazines. He was unknown to the tourists who visited the historical site, just another laborer restoring the land.

Maeve walked out from the main hall, carrying two tin mugs of warm tea. She sat on a wooden bench nearby, watching him work.

"The board of trustees approved the grant for the forest sanctuary today," she said, handing him a mug. "The bloodline's name is clean now, Julian."

Julian took a sip of the tea, feeling the warmth spread through his hands. He looked down at his palm—the faint scar left by the signet ring had faded into a simple line across his skin.

"It was never about the name, Maeve," Julian said, looking across the green, thriving valley where the fire had once raged. "It was about the land underneath it."

He placed his hand flat against the earth—deep, dark, and honest. The Vane empire had burned to ash, but here, on the land that had survived the fire, something real was finally growing.
