Chapter 6: The Architect of Lies

The silence in the dim room was broken only by the hum of the old refrigerator. Julian picked up one of the yellowed journals from the table, his fingers brushing against the faded ink of his father’s precise handwriting.
"He kept duplicate ledgers," Maeve said, leaning forward. "Arthur was paranoid. He knew that a lie required constant maintenance. He documented every bribe paid to the city auditors, every arsonist’s fee, every silence bought."
Julian opened the notebook. On page after page, financial transactions were logged alongside names he recognized—men who now sat on the supreme court, retired police chiefs, and founding board members of Vane Holdings. His entire wealth, the foundation of his pristine reputation, was built on an intricate architecture of extortion and bloodshed.
"He told me my mother died of illness," Julian said, his voice barely audible.
"She died of grief," Maeve replied coldly. "She knew what Arthur had done to us. When she tried to go to the federal prosecutors, she disappeared into a private psychiatric facility in Switzerland. Arthur paid the director handsomely to ensure she never spoke again."
Julian felt a violent nausea rise in his throat. Every childhood memory, every word of advice his father had given him about 'protecting the family honor,' dissolved into ash. He wasn't the prince of an honorable dynasty; he was the trustee of a criminal syndicate.

"What do you expect me to do?" Julian asked, looking at Maeve’s scarred arms. "If I go public with this without a strategy, the board will insulate the company, declare me incompetent, and sweep you back into the dark."
Maeve leaned in, her eyes locked onto his. "I don't expect you to ask for forgiveness, Julian. I expect you to hand over the keys to the kingdom."
