Chapter 16 - The Remnants of the SyndicateThe winter sun setting over the Hudson River cast long, amber shadows across the parquet floor of Clara’s brownstone in West Village.

Six months after the public collapse of Project Ares, the Eleanor Mercer Foundation had established itself as a beacon of ethical neurological research. Yet, as the headlines faded, the quieter, more complex work of dismantling Julian’s shadowy network remained.

Clara sat at a wide oak desk, tracing a digital paper trail provided by federal investigators. Beside her sat Dr. Sarah Aris, holding a fresh mug of black tea.

"Julian was the face of the operation," Sarah said, pointing a finger at a highlighted cluster of shell corporations on her tablet screen. "But he didn't build the military-grade bio-resonant quartz arrays alone. The physical components were manufactured by Aegis Dynamics—a private defense contractor based in Zurich."

Clara leaned back, rubbing her temples. "Has the Department of Justice issued subpoenas?"

"They tried," Sarah replied grimly. "Aegis claims they were simply fulfilling a standard commercial contract for medical glass. They've invoked sovereign immunity under Swiss commercial privacy laws. Worse still, their lead board member just requested an emergency meeting with the Foundation's board."

"Who?" Clara asked, her eyes narrowing.

"Baron Victor von Klemperer," Sarah said softly. "The man who financed your father's original laboratory twenty years ago."

Before Clara could digest the name, ten-year-old Leo walked into the study, wearing his school uniform, holding a notebook filled with hand-drawn circuit diagrams.

"He's outside," Leo said quietly, looking toward the front window.

Clara stood up, walking to the draperies. Parked at the curb was a sleek, armored black Maybach bearing diplomatic plates. Standing by the rear door was an elderly man in an immaculate dark charcoal overcoat, holding an antique gold-headed cane.

The architect of her father's financial ties had finally arrived to claim what he believed was his investment.
