Chapter 17 - The Baron's DemandThe air in the brownstone’s drawing room was heavy with the scent of cedar and aged leather.

Baron Victor von Klemperer sat gracefully in an armchair across from Clara, his silver hair perfectly combed, his pale blue eyes piercing and unreadable. He took a slow, deliberate sip of tea before setting his china cup down with a soft clink.
"You have your mother's eyes, Clara," the Baron began, his voice deep and accented with old German cadence. "And, it appears, your mother's unfortunate stubbornness."
"I call it integrity, Baron," Clara said coolly, sitting straight in her chair, her hands folded in her lap. "Your company supplied the bio-resonant components Julian used to trap three dozen scientists in a synthetic coma."
"Julian was an impatient amateur," Victor dismissed with a wave of his hand. "He tried to turn a delicate, revolutionary technology into a blunt instrument of corporate extortion. That was his failure. But the fundamental research—the bio-electric resonance sequence encoded inside young Leo—belongs to Aegis Dynamics under the 2004 master development agreement signed by your father."
Leo, standing near the doorway beside Sarah, held his breath, his hand instinctively touching the pocket where his mother's silver tube used to sit.
"My father had no right to sign away my mother's life's work," Clara stated, her voice dropping into a hard, absolute register. "And he certainly had no right to collateralize a child."
"The legal system does not share your emotional sentimentality, Ms. Mercer," Victor replied, pulling a thick leather folder from his briefcase and setting it on the coffee table. "This is an international arbitration notice. If you do not grant Aegis exclusive licensing rights to the bio-resonance frequency by Friday, we will file an injunction that freezes every asset of the Mercer Foundation."

He stood up, resting his gold cane against the floor.
"You have four days to decide whether you want to run a foundation... or spend the next twenty years in bankruptcy court."
