Chapter 4 - The Black SedanThe two men in trench coats moved with practiced, military efficiency.

The first man lunged toward Clara, his hand snapping out to grab her hair, while the second drew a high-voltage stun baton from beneath his coat. They weren't hospital orderlies; they were private security contractors paid to make inconvenient people disappear.

"Run, Leo!" Clara screamed.

She didn't wait for her body to remember how to fight. Channeling every ounce of rage that had built up over four years of sitting in a velvet-lined cage, Clara swung her left arm with all her weight. The heavy pearl necklace snapped, sending a shower of white spheres cascading against the man's face like hail.

The man flinched, stepping back on the slick pavement.

In that fraction of a second, Leo didn't run away. He leaped forward, grabbing the tarnished silver tube from his pocket. He drove the metal tip directly into the wrist of the man holding the stun baton.

A sharp, blue arc of light flickered across the cylinder.

The man let out a choked scream, his eyes rolling back as his entire body went rigid. The stun baton clattered onto the wet asphalt, and the heavy contractor collapsed into a puddle like a sack of stones.

"What the—!" Julian yelled, stepping back in shock.

"This way!" Leo yelled, grabbing Clara’s hand with his dirty, impossibly strong fingers.

Clara didn't hesitate. Ignoring the blinding pain in her knees, she turned and ran down the alley toward the main street. Her silk dress tore against a rusty iron gate, her shoes dropped somewhere in the dark, but her feet struck the wet concrete with a rhythmic, thunderous beat that sounded like music.

They burst out onto 5th Avenue into a wall of yellow taxi horns, rain, and city traffic.

A sleek, dark gray Volvo sedan pulled up sharply to the curb three feet in front of them, its rear door flying open from the inside.

"Get in!" a woman's voice barked from the dark interior.

Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second, but Leo was already scrambling into the leather backseat. "It's Dr. Aris!" he yelled over the sound of rain. "She's good!"

Clara threw herself into the back of the sedan just as Julian and his remaining contractor rounded the corner of the alley. Julian’s face was contorted in dark, murderous rage as he reached into his jacket for a phone.

The driver—a woman in her late forty with sharp grey eyes and a severe dark coat—slammed her foot on the accelerator. The Volvo’s tires screeched against the wet asphalt, launching the car forward into the stream of evening traffic, leaving Julian and the Grand St. Regis behind in a spray of rain and city lights.

Clara collapsed against the leather seat, gasping for air, her heart pounding against her ribs like a sledgehammer. She looked at her feet—dirty, wet, bruised, but entirely hers.

The woman in the front seat turned her head slightly, her sharp eyes meeting Clara’s in the rearview mirror.

"Welcome back to the real world, Ms. Mercer," Dr. Aris said grimly. "My name is Sarah Aris. I was your mother's lead research assistant before your brother had me blacklisted."

She glanced down at the silver cylinder resting in Leo's lap.

"I see you've met project Zero."
