Chapter 10 - The Ashes of ArroganceI walked slowly into the living room, my heels clicking softly against the dark herringbone hardwood floors.

I stopped beside the cardboard box where my mother’s hand-painted porcelain vase sat, cracked down the side where someone had carelessly tossed a pair of heavy brass bookends on top of it.

I picked up the cracked vase, looking at the broken porcelain in my palm.

"Who packed this box?" I asked softly.

Chloe folded her arms, scoffing loudly. "I did. We needed to clear out your trash so Jessica could redecorate. Dominic gave us the keys this morning before the funeral. Now get out before I call the building security!"

My father stepped into the living room, his cold gray eyes locking onto Chloe with a pressure so intense she involuntarily took a step backward.

"Building security reports to my daughter, young lady," Charles Vale said, his voice flat and terrifying. "As does the bank holding the lease on this entire building."

Sterling stepped forward, pulling an immediate eviction notice from his binder and handing it to Chloe.

"You have six minutes to vacate these premises," Sterling said. "You will leave all personal property, jewelry, designer handbags, and coats behind. Everything inside this residence purchased with funds from the DeLuca accounts is now subject to federal court forfeiture."

Chloe’s friends gasped, immediately dropping the champagne glasses onto the rug and reaching for their coats.

"You can't take my coat!" Chloe shrieked, clutching her three-thousand-dollar mink jacket tight around her shoulders. "Jessica bought this for me last week!"

"With stolen money," I said, looking Chloe dead in the eye. "Take it off."

"No!" Chloe screamed.

Two Vale security guards stepped forward without a word. Within five seconds, the mink coat was pulled off her arms, her designer handbag was snatched from her shoulder and dumped onto the table, and her phone was confiscated pending forensic review.

"My sister will destroy you!" Chloe sobbed hysterically as the guards escorted her and her friends toward the elevator. "When Dominic’s lawyers get involved, you’re going to end up in the gutter where you belong!"

"Dominic is currently sitting in a federal holding cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center without bail, Miss Mercer," Sterling informed her politely as the elevator doors began to close. "And your sister is in the room right next to his."

The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off Chloe’s shrill screams.

I stood alone in the quiet center of the sprawling penthouse, looking out at the vast grey expanse of Lake Michigan.

My father walked up beside me, resting his hand gently on my shoulder.

"Do you want to keep this place, Elena?" Dad asked softly. "I can have a crew tear it down to the bare concrete and rebuild it from scratch tomorrow."

I looked around at the grand room where I had spent five years trying to make a home for a man who never valued me.

"No," I said, dropping the broken piece of porcelain into the trash. "Sell it. Burn the furniture. Donate the proceeds to Victor's children's hospital."

I turned back toward my father, a quiet, unshakeable smile finally appearing on my face.

"I’m ready to go home, Dad."

Here are Chapters 11 through 15, tracking the second act of Elena’s retribution—the public collapse of the Mercer family, the discovery of a deeper corporate conspiracy, and the ruthless takeover of Vale Global’s commercial rivals.
