Chapter 14 - The Gala of GhostsAt 8:30 PM, the Grand Hyatt Ballroom was bathed in golden light, dripping with crystal chandeliers and overflowing with eight hundred members of high society, shipping magnates, and international diplomats.

Julian Vance stood near the grand marble staircase, sipping vintage champagne and basking in the congratulations of his peers. Apex Logistics had just announced a forty percent expansion in its quarterly market projection—a spike directly fueled by the trade secrets stolen from Vale Global.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.
The ambient chatter in the room evaporated into total, breathless silence.
I stepped onto the polished marble floor wearing a backless, midnight-black velvet gown that clung to my silhouette like shadow. Around my neck sat the legendary Vance Star—a seventy-carat pear-cut blue diamond that had belonged to my mother, glowing with an impossible, fire-filled clarity under the spotlights.
Beside me walked my father, Charles Vale, his presence instantly drawing every camera lens in the room.
Julian Vance’s champagne glass paused inches from his lips. His sharp, aristocratic face flickered with a sudden, subtle twitch of unease.
I walked straight down the center of the ballroom, the crowd parting like the Red Sea before us, until I stopped three paces away from Julian Vance.
"Mr. Vance," I said, my voice smooth as silk and carried effortlessly across the silent room. "Congratulations on your quarter projections."

Julian recovered his composure instantly, forcing a warm, charming smile as he adjusted his tuxedo cuffs. "Elena... or should I say, Mrs. Vale? What a pleasant surprise. I was deeply saddened to hear about poor Victor’s passing... and the unfortunate scandal surrounding your ex-husband."
"Unfortunate indeed," I smiled, taking a glass of sparkling water from a passing waiter's tray. "Especially since the federal grand jury expanded its indictment twenty minutes ago."
