Chapter 20 - The Sovereign's PeaceThat evening, the sun set over Lake Michigan, casting long, golden rays of light across the quiet gardens of the Vale private estate in Lake Forest.

The air was sweet with the scent of blooming jasmine and fresh grass.

I sat on the wide stone terrace, sipping a cup of chamomile tea while reading through the quarterly reports of the Vale Global Foundation. On the table beside me sat a small, framed photograph of Victor DeLuca smiling warmly from his hospital bed, holding my hand during his final days.

Arthur Sterling walked out onto the terrace, carrying a leather dossier under his arm.

"All final legal filings have been settled, Elena," Sterling said with a warm, respectful bow. "Dominic DeLuca was transferred to his permanent facility yesterday morning. Jessica Mercer’s appeals have been rejected by the seventh circuit court. The Mercer family’s bankruptcy proceedings are officially closed."

"Thank you, Arthur," I said, setting my tea cup down with a soft click. "For everything."

Sterling smiled, set the dossier on the table, and walked back inside the house, leaving me alone in the peaceful twilight.

I stood up and walked to the edge of the stone terrace, looking out over the endless blue horizon of the lake where Vale Global’s commercial ships moved quietly across the water, their lights glittering like fallen stars against the evening sky.

My phone rang softly on the table. The caller ID showed a simple, familiar label: Dad.

I picked it up, pressing the smooth glass to my ear.

"Hello, Dad," I said softly.

"Are you ready for tomorrow's board meeting in Geneva, Elena?" Charles Vale's deep, warm voice came through the speaker. "The European directors are eager to meet the new principal shareholder."

I looked out at the vast, beautiful world stretched out before me—a world where I no longer had to hide, no longer had to apologize, and no longer had to bow to anyone.

"I'm ready, Dad," I said, a clear, radiant smile lighting up my face. "Tell them the CEO of Vale Global has arrived."

I hung up the phone, took a deep, clean breath of the crisp night air, and stepped forward into the future I had earned.
