Chapter 10 - CHARLES WHITMORECharles Whitmore arrived at Blackwood Ranch before Daniel called him.

That alone was suspicious.

His black sedan pulled up shortly after sunset.

The seventy-two-year-old attorney stepped out wearing an expensive raincoat despite the clear sky.

“I heard about Claire,” he said.

Daniel studied him.

“From whom?”

Charles smiled sadly.

“News travels.”

“Does it?”

Charles had known Daniel since childhood.

He attended every birthday.

Every funeral.

He helped Daniel through Laura’s death.

He had held Ethan as an infant.

Trusting him had always felt automatic.

Now Daniel saw him differently.

They sat in the study.

Marcus monitored from another room.

Daniel did not mention Evelyn.

Not yet.

“I found some documents Laura hid.”

Charles’s eyes flickered.

“What kind?”

“Financial.”

“That doesn’t surprise me.”

“Why?”

“Laura became obsessed with the foundation toward the end.”

Daniel felt anger rise.

“Obsessed?”

“Perhaps that’s the wrong word.”

“It is.”

Charles sighed.

“She believed Thomas had mismanaged funds.”

“Did he?”

Charles hesitated.

“There were irregularities.”

“You handled the accounts.”

“Some.”

“You handled his will.”

“Yes.”

“I want the original.”

Charles sat back.

“Why?”

“Because I’m asking.”

“The original is stored with the court.”

“My mother says otherwise.”

For the first time, Charles lost control of his face.

Only briefly.

But Daniel saw it.

“Your mother?”

“Evelyn.”

Charles looked toward the door.

Daniel leaned forward.

“She’s alive.”

Charles’s hand tightened around his cane.

“That’s impossible.”

“Is it?”

“Daniel, your mother died decades ago.”

“Patrick Beaumont signed the death certificate.”

Charles stood.

“I don’t know what game someone is playing—”

“Sit down.”

Charles stared at him.

Daniel had never spoken to him that way.

After a moment, Charles sat.

“Did you know Claire before you introduced us?”

“No.”

“Did you know her father?”

“Professionally.”

“Victor Shaw?”

Charles paused.

“Perhaps.”

“Laura?”

“Obviously.”

“Did Laura ever accuse you of stealing from the foundation?”

“No.”

Daniel placed a photocopy of the ledger on the table.

Charles looked at it.

His face remained calm.

“What is this supposed to prove?”

“Not sure yet.”

Daniel pointed to repeated initials.

C.W.

Charles smiled.

“Charles Whitmore is not exactly a rare name.”

“In this foundation it is.”

Charles leaned closer.

“These notes could mean anything.”

Daniel watched him.

“You recommended Claire to me.”

“I introduced you socially.”

“Knowing she had worked with the people Laura was investigating.”

“I did not know that.”

“You’re lying.”

Charles stood again.

“I won’t sit here and be accused by a grieving man chasing conspiracy theories.”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Laura wasn’t paranoid.”

Charles froze.

Daniel continued.

“You told me she was.”

“I said grief can distort memory.”

“You told police she had been anxious.”

“She was.”

“You encouraged them to believe her crash might have been caused by emotional distress.”

“Because she was distressed.”

“She was being followed.”

Charles’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.”

There.

The first real crack.

Daniel stared.

“Then tell me.”

Charles looked at him for a long time.

Then his expression softened into something almost paternal.

“Burn the box.”

Daniel’s heartbeat accelerated.

“What?”

“Take Ethan. Take Rebecca. Sell Blackwood. Leave.”

“Why?”

“Because your father should have done the same thing thirty years ago.”

Daniel stood.

“You knew my mother was alive.”

Charles didn’t deny it.

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who threatened her?”

“Daniel—”

“WHO?”

Charles closed his eyes.

“Your grandfather.”

Daniel stepped back.

“Arthur Mercer?”

Arthur had built the family fortune.

He died when Daniel was nineteen.

“He started the land scheme?”

“He started much more than that.”

Charles described a network of fraudulent land acquisitions stretching back to the 1970s.

Arthur used charitable funds to purchase property secretly.

Sheriffs, judges and businessmen received payments.

Patrick Beaumont eventually joined.

Thomas discovered pieces of the operation and tried to stop his father.

Evelyn helped Thomas gather evidence.

Arthur threatened their children.

Daniel and Rebecca.

“That’s why Mom disappeared.”

Charles nodded.

“She believed if everyone thought she was dead, Arthur would stop looking for evidence she had hidden.”

“But Arthur died twenty years ago.”

“The operation didn’t.”

“Who continued it?”

Charles looked away.

Daniel understood.

“You.”

Charles did not speak.

Daniel felt physically ill.

“You were my father’s best friend.”

“I was trying to control something that already existed.”

“You stole from us.”

“I kept powerful people from destroying you.”

“You introduced me to Claire.”

“That was not supposed to happen the way it did.”

“What does that mean?”

Charles rubbed his forehead.

“Claire came to me after Patrick died. She knew enough to be dangerous. I thought keeping her close would let me control her.”

“So you gave her access to my family?”

“I did not expect her to marry you.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You’re unbelievable.”

Charles looked genuinely ashamed.

“Laura discovered too much.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did you do to her?”

“Nothing.”

“What did Victor do?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I swear to you, I did not order Laura’s death.”

“Was it an accident?”

Charles said nothing.

That silence answered enough.

Daniel’s phone vibrated.

A message from Rebecca.

ETHAN IS MISSING.

Daniel’s face changed.

He called immediately.

Rebecca answered crying.

“He was in his room. I went downstairs for two minutes.”

“Where’s Sam?”

“Searching.”

“Cameras?”

“The system went offline.”

Daniel looked at Charles.

The old man appeared genuinely shocked.

“I had nothing to do with this.”

Daniel grabbed his coat.

Charles called after him.

“Daniel!”

He turned.

Charles’s voice trembled.

“If Claire took Ethan, she isn’t doing it for revenge.”

“Then why?”

“Because she thinks Ethan knows where Laura hid the rest.”

Daniel froze.

“The rest of what?”

May you like

Charles stared at him.

“The evidence that can send every surviving member of the network to prison.”
