Chapter 13 - MOTHER AND SONDaniel found Evelyn inside the underground bunker.

She stood beside the wall of photographs holding a small revolver.

For several seconds they only stared at each other.

Thirty years.

Daniel had imagined this moment countless times as a child.

His mother appearing at the front door.

Explaining everything.

Holding him.

Instead they met in a criminal hideout beneath land stolen from their family.

“Mom.”

Evelyn lowered the gun.

Daniel crossed the room.

She moved toward him.

They embraced.

The years between them did not disappear.

But for one moment, Daniel was twelve again.

“I’m sorry,” Evelyn whispered.

He stepped back.

“Where have you been?”

“Montana. Oregon. Canada for a while.”

“You watched us?”

“When I could.”

“You let us think you were dead.”

“I believed it was the only way.”

“You could have come back after Arthur died.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Arthur wasn’t the only threat.”

“Charles?”

Evelyn’s eyes darkened.

“Charles was involved before Thomas understood how deep it went.”

Daniel thought of the old man who had practically raised him after Thomas died.

“Did Dad know?”

“Eventually.”

“What happened?”

Evelyn sat.

She explained.

Arthur Mercer built Blackwood’s fortune through legitimate ranching and questionable land deals.

By the 1980s, he created a network using charitable foundations to purchase land.

Patrick Beaumont protected him legally.

Charles managed paperwork.

Thomas discovered the operation after joining the family business.

He wanted out.

Evelyn encouraged him to expose Arthur.

Arthur threatened Daniel and Rebecca.

“When I refused to stop collecting evidence, your grandfather staged my death.”

Daniel stared.

“Arthur did?”

“He gave me a choice. Disappear, or he would ruin Thomas and take you children away.”

“And you believed him.”

“I had seen what he could do.”

“Dad agreed?”

“Not at first.”

Tears filled Evelyn’s eyes.

“We fought terribly. Then a threat was made against Rebecca’s school bus.”

Daniel went cold.

“After that, Thomas helped me disappear.”

“So Dad knew you were alive.”

“Yes.”

“Until when?”

“Until his death.”

Daniel looked away.

Another betrayal built from fear.

Evelyn continued.

Thomas secretly investigated the network for years.

When lithium surveys made Blackwood North valuable, Arthur’s old partners became more aggressive.

Thomas placed the land into a protected trust through his original will.

Charles replaced it after Thomas died.

“The will in probate is fake?”

“Yes.”

“Where’s the real one?”

“Laura found it.”

“In the second cache.”

Evelyn nodded.

“I believe so.”

“Victor has it.”

Her face changed.

“He found the tube?”

“Yes.”

“We have to stop him.”

“Why did you come back now?”

“Because Helen Ward died.”

Daniel remembered the attorney connected to Evelyn’s Montana trust.

“When?”

“Four days ago.”

“How?”

“Supposed heart attack.”

“You don’t believe it.”

“No.”

Before dying, Helen sent Evelyn a message.

THEY FOUND ME. LAURA’S EVIDENCE ISN’T SAFE.

That brought Evelyn back.

She came to the ranch searching for Sam.

Instead she met Ethan.

“I wanted to tell him who I was.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“He looked frightened when I mentioned the box. I realized someone might be watching.”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“Claire.”

“Maybe.”

“She abused him.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“You know?”

“I saw some of it.”

Daniel stared.

“You saw my son being hurt and didn’t stop it?”

“I saw Claire yelling at him once. I didn’t see what happened during the storm.”

“That was enough.”

“You’re right.”

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“I have spent thirty years telling myself hiding kept this family safe. Maybe all hiding did was leave room for worse people.”

Daniel sat across from her.

“We stop hiding now.”

Evelyn nodded.

Footsteps sounded above.

They both froze.

Daniel assumed Marcus.

Then Victor’s voice echoed down the stairwell.

“Touching reunion.”

Victor appeared with a pistol in one hand and the waterproof tube in the other.

Daniel stood.

Evelyn raised her revolver.

Victor smiled.

“Put it down, Evelyn.”

“You first.”

“You’re seventy years old.”

“And you’ve always been stupid.”

Victor laughed.

“Laura used to say that too.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What happened the night Laura died?”

Victor’s smile faded.

“Not now.”

“Did you kill her?”

Victor glanced at Evelyn.

“Your wife made choices.”

“What choices?”

“She wouldn’t stop.”

Daniel moved closer.

Victor raised the gun.

“Daniel.”

Evelyn said, “Don’t.”

Victor tapped the waterproof tube.

“This contains enough evidence to destroy very important people.”

“You’re one of them.”

“I’m realistic enough to know when to negotiate.”

“With whom?”

A vehicle arrived outside.

Victor smiled.

“Someone who can make all of this disappear.”

Daniel heard another set of footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Then Charles Whitmore appeared at the top of the stairs.

Daniel stared.

Charles looked down at Victor.

“You were told to leave the boy alone.”

Victor shrugged.

“Claire became emotional.”

Charles descended.

Evelyn raised her weapon toward him.

“You.”

Charles stopped.

“Hello, Evelyn.”

Thirty years of hatred passed silently between them.

Daniel looked from Charles to Victor.

“So this is it?”

Charles shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Victor.

“This is where I clean up my final mistake.”

Victor’s smile vanished.

“What?”

May you like

Charles drew a gun.

And pointed it directly at Victor.
