Chapter 14 - THE NETWORK BREAKSNobody moved.

Victor looked genuinely surprised.

“You’re threatening me?”

Charles kept the gun steady.

“I should have removed you years ago.”

“You don’t have the nerve.”

“You murdered Laura.”

Daniel’s heart stopped.

Victor’s eyes flicked toward him.

Charles continued.

“You were supposed to frighten her away from meeting the investigator.”

Victor’s expression hardened.

“She caused the crash.”

“You forced her off the road.”

“I never touched her car.”

“You followed her through a storm at seventy miles an hour.”

Daniel stepped toward Victor.

“You killed my wife.”

Victor raised his pistol.

Charles shouted.

“Daniel, stay back!”

Victor laughed.

“Everybody wants one simple villain.”

His gaze moved toward Claire’s absent space as if she were there.

“Patrick ordered me to follow Laura. Charles wanted the evidence. Claire gave us the route.”

Daniel’s breathing became heavy.

“And you chased her.”

“I tried to make her stop.”

“She died.”

Victor shrugged.

The gesture almost broke Daniel.

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.”

Victor continued.

“She panicked.”

Daniel lunged.

A gunshot exploded.

The bullet hit the ceiling.

Charles had fired warningly.

Dust fell.

“Enough!”

Victor pointed his gun at Charles.

“You think you’re innocent?”

“No.”

Charles looked at Daniel.

“I forged records. I protected Arthur. I continued the network after his death.”

“Why?” Daniel asked.

“Because by then too many people were involved.”

“That’s your excuse?”

“No.”

Charles looked suddenly ancient.

“It is my confession.”

Victor scoffed.

“You confess, we all go to prison.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Victor stared.

“You’re serious.”

“I’m tired.”

Charles lowered his gun slightly.

“That little boy nearly died inside the same machinery we created thirty years ago.”

Daniel corrected him.

“Ethan didn’t nearly die.”

Charles nodded.

“But we created Claire. We created her fear. Patrick created Victor. Arthur created me. Every generation told itself the next terrible thing was necessary to protect the last.”

Evelyn said quietly, “And Laura refused.”

“Yes.”

Charles looked at Daniel.

“She was the only one who simply said no.”

Victor backed toward the stairway.

“This speech is touching.”

Charles turned his weapon back toward him.

“Give Daniel the tube.”

“No.”

“Victor.”

“I’ve spent half my life cleaning up after rich families.”

“You were paid.”

“Not enough.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Victor panicked.

“You called them?”

Charles smiled faintly.

“I did.”

Victor fired.

The shot struck Charles in the shoulder.

Everything erupted.

Evelyn fired toward the floor beside Victor.

Daniel tackled him.

The waterproof tube rolled away.

Victor punched Daniel.

Daniel hit him back.

They crashed into the table.

Marcus and deputies stormed downstairs.

“DROP THE WEAPON!”

Victor reached for his gun.

Marcus kicked it away.

Within seconds Victor was restrained.

Daniel stood breathing heavily.

Charles sat against the wall holding his bleeding shoulder.

Not fatal.

Evelyn picked up the tube.

She handed it to Daniel.

“For Laura.”

He opened it.

Inside was Thomas Mercer’s original will.

A geological report.

Several signed affidavits.

And a memory card.

Marcus looked at the documents.

“This is enough to reopen everything.”

“Everything?”

“Your mother’s fake death. Laura’s crash. Financial crimes. Land fraud.”

Victor laughed from the floor.

“You think paper wins?”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

He held up the memory card.

“But maybe this does.”

The card contained video.

Laura had installed a hidden camera near the north gate.

The same camera police believed had been destroyed.

She had removed the memory card before her death.

The footage showed Patrick Beaumont meeting Charles.

Victor receiving cash.

Claire delivering documents.

Thomas confronting them years earlier.

Then another file appeared.

Timestamped the night Laura died.

Laura sat inside her car recording herself.

If you’re watching this, I’m on my way to meet Special Agent Naomi Price.

Daniel froze.

A federal agent.

Laura continued.

I have enough evidence now.

If something happens tonight, Daniel needs to know that Claire tried to warn me this afternoon.

Daniel looked up.

Claire tried to warn her?

Laura’s video continued.

Claire told me Patrick knows about the meeting. She begged me not to go.

Daniel stared.

Claire had admitted giving Patrick the route.

But Laura said Claire warned her too.

The contradiction mattered.

Then the video showed something else.

Laura looked behind her.

Headlights appeared.

She whispered:

Victor.

The video ended.

Marcus exhaled.

“That confirms pursuit.”

Daniel looked toward Charles.

“Did Claire try to save Laura?”

Charles nodded weakly.

“She did.”

“Then why did she tell Patrick?”

“Because he threatened her younger brother.”

Daniel frowned.

“Claire has a brother?”

“Had.”

“What happened?”

“Patrick sent him away after Laura’s death.”

“Where?”

“No one knows.”

Victor began laughing.

Claire’s brother.

Another hidden person.

Another family destroyed by the network.

Daniel felt exhaustion settling over him.

He had believed opening Laura’s box would reveal the truth.

Instead every answer created another question.

Then Marcus’s radio crackled.

A deputy at the ranch.

“Marcus, we have a problem.”

“What?”

“Claire Mercer just surrendered herself.”

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“That’s not a problem.”

The deputy continued.

“She brought someone with her.”

“Who?”

“A man named Nicholas Beaumont.”

Claire’s missing brother.

And according to him, Laura’s death was not Victor’s only crime.

Nicholas claimed Victor had murdered Thomas Mercer too.
